A self-organizing personal file system is disclosed that evaluates the 'importance' of terms and phrases in a document in a personal corpus relative to usage in a reference corpus. A personalized term weighting scheme assigns a weight to terms or phrases based on the frequency of occurrence of the corresponding term or phrase in a reference corpus. Documents are positioned in a visual file space associated with a personal corpus by storing each of the documents with an indication of the term weight for terms appearing in the corresponding document. A singular value decomposition is performed based on the term weights to position a given document in the visual file space based on a relative frequency distribution of terms of the document compared to the occurrence of such terms in a reference corpus.

Method and apparatus for maintaining and navigating a non-hierarchical personal spatial file system

A self-organizing personal file system is disclosed that evaluates the 'importance' of terms and phrases in a document in a personal corpus relative to usage in a reference corpus. A personalized term weighting scheme assigns a weight to terms or phrases based on the frequency of occurrence of the corresponding term or phrase in a reference corpus. The personalized term weighting for a given term or phrase can be used to store and access documents containing the corresponding term or phrase in the spatial file system and provides coordinates in a spatial file system, for one or more documents containing the corresponding term or phrase. The location of a given document in a file space may be specified by the relative frequency distribution of the stems of its significant terms or phrases compared to the occurrence of such terms or phrases in a reference corpus.

A Write Broadcast system and method uses a base station to write sent data to all or some selected number (sub group) of tags in a base station field simultaneously. By unselecting the tags that have been successfully written to, and requesting a response from the remaining tags in the field (or sub group), the system determines, by receiving a response to the request, that there are tags in the field (sub group) that were unsuccessfully written to. Another Write Broadcast signal is sent to these tags. The system is useful for quickly (simultaneously) 'stamping' information on the tag memory of a large number of tags in the field of the base station.

Radio frequency identification system write broadcast capability

An active RF transponder is provided with a wake-up circuit that wakes the RF transponder from a sleep state upon detection of an RF interrogating signal. The active RF transponder includes a battery, an antenna adapted to receive RF signals from an interrogator, and electronic circuitry providing the various RF transponder functions of sending/receiving signals and storing data. A first embodiment of the invention includes a wake-up circuit that periodically checks for the presence of an RF signal at the antenna. The wake-up circuit is coupled to the antenna and includes a switch adapted to selectively couple the battery to the electronic circuitry and provide electrical power thereto upon detection of the RF signals by the antenna. The wake-up circuit further comprises an oscillator providing a clock signal having a low duty cycle that defines intervals during which the antenna is sampled for presence of the RF signals (e.g., approximately 20 ns every 100 &mgr;s). A second embodiment of the RF transponder includes a wake-up circuit as in the first embodiment that is further adapted to detect a code sequence modulated in the RF signals. The code sequence is unique for a class of RF transponder, so the wake-up circuit can discriminate between interrogating signals. A third embodiment of the RF transponder includes a wake-up circuit that wakes the RF transponder upon detection of an RF signal that contains data within a desired band of frequencies. This embodiment enables the RF transponder to discriminate between RF signals that likely contain valid data and other RF noise. After the RF transponder has been waked, the wake-up circuit returns the RF transponder to a sleep state if valid data is not detected within a predetermined period of time.

The present invention provides an RF tag having an antenna that can be selectively tuned to achieve optimal performance. The RF tag comprises an RF transponder integrated circuit and an antenna connected to the RF transponder integrated circuit. The antenna includes components such as tuning stubs and loading bars that are physically alterable to selectively vary the performance characteristics of the antenna. The tuning stub and loading bar may each further comprising a variably selectable length having elements that may be removed by punching, cutting, etching, laser trimming or other process. A method of sending data from a base station to a passive RF tag and writing the data to a tag non-volatile memory which detects a &ldquo;partial write&rdquo;, where the tag voltage falls during the write process under the voltage sufficient to reliably write the tag non-volatile memory, is presented. The tag voltage is compared to a stable reference voltage during the time the tag memory is being written, and if the tag voltage falls below an acceptable level, a flag in the tag non-volatile memory is cleared.
