A method and apparatus for defining, in a computing system, the bit size of an instruction to be executed by a processing unit. Instructions are realized in the form of a plurality of memory location devices. At least one of said memory location devices, in a predetermined position, is established as a MODE bit. The MODE bit assumes a first value indicative of parallel instruction execution and assumes a second value indicative of non-parallel instruction execution.

A method for selectively controlling the operation of a computer system so that the computer system is selectively caused to execute instructions of a first predetermined bit length or instructions of a second predetermined bit length. The method comprises the preliminary steps of storing instruction data in a set of EVEN instruction storage locations; storing instruction data in a set of ODD instruction locations; establishing an EVEN execution pointer; and establishing an ODD execution pointer. At a first given time, either the EVEN execution pointer is incremented by a predetermined COUNT or the ODD execution pointer is incremented by the predetermined COUNT; but both pointers are not simultaneously incremented by the COUNT. The method causes an instruction to be executed, which instruction was stored entirely in either an EVEN instruction location or entirely in an ODD instruction location. At a second given time, both the EVEN instruction pointer and the ODD instruction pointer are incremented by the predetermined COUNT, thereby causing an instruction to be executed, which instruction constitutes a combination of instruction data from an EVEN instruction storage location and instruction data from an ODD instruction storage location.

Method for controlling the operation of a computer implemented apparatus

The present invention provides a unified image and graphics processing system that provides both image and graphics processing at high speeds. The system includes a parallel vector processing unit, a graphics subsystem, a shared memory and a set of high-speed data buses for connecting all of the other components. Generally, the parallel vector processing unit includes a series of vector processors. Each processor includes a vector address generator for efficient generation of memory addresses for regular address sequences. In order to synchronize and control the vector processors' accesses to shared memory, the parallel vector processing unit includes shared memory access logic. The logic is incorporated into each vector processor. The graphics subsystem includes a series of polygon processors in a pipelined configuration. Each processor is connected in the pipeline by a first-in-first-out (FIFO) buffer for passing data results. Additionally, each polygon processor is connected to a local shared memory in which program instructions and data are stored. The graphics subsystem also includes a device addressing mechanism for identifying a destination device using a tagged address. The shared memory, the parallel vector processor and the graphics subsystem also incorporate an abbreviated addressing scheme, which reduces the amount of information required to request sequential addresses from the shared memory.
