An electronic device, such as a digital camera, includes a deletion mode whereby a camera/electronic device user can delete captured images or data files that have already been transferred in order to make room in the electronic device or digital camera memory for capturing further images. In one embodiment, a digital camera keeps track of which images have already been transferred to an external storage device and presents those to the user as potential images to be deleted. In another embodiment, the user is presented with a 'delete all transferred images' which when selected deletes all the captured images that have already been transferred. In still another embodiment, deletion criteria are used to prioritize which images are deleted first.

Method for deleting data files in an electronic device

The present disclosure relates to a an electronic device such as a digital camerathat includes a deletion mode whereby a camera/electronic device user can delete captured images or data files that have already been transferred in order to make room in the electronic device or digital camera memory for capturing further images. A method for controlling a digital camera system having an optical system with an F/# that can be varied between a minimum F/# and a maximum F/#, comprising: setting the optical system F/# to a first F/#; capturing an evaluation image of the scene; analyzing the evaluation image to determine whether a subject is acceptably focused; if the subject is acceptably focused setting a capture F/# to be equal to the first F/#, otherwise the optical system F/# is iteratively increased until the subject is determined to be acceptably focused, or until a maximum F/# is reached; determining a capture F/# responsive to the F/# where the subject is acceptably focused; setting the optical system to use the capture F/#; capturing an archival image of the scene using the image sensor; and storing the captured archival image in a storage memory.

Extending a digital camera focus range

A digital camera system providing an extended focus range, comprising: a program memory storing instructions to implement a method for capturing a focused digital image. The method includes: setting an optical system F/# to a first F/#; capturing an evaluation image of the scene; analyzing the evaluation image to determine whether a subject is acceptably focused; if the subject is acceptably focused setting a capture F/# to be equal to the first F/#, otherwise the optical system F/# is iteratively increased until the subject is determined to be acceptably focused, or until a maximum F/# is reached; determining a capture F/# responsive to the F/# where the subject is acceptably focused; setting the optical system to use the capture F/#; capturing an archival image of the scene using the image sensor; and storing the captured archival image in a storage memory.

Digital camera providing an extended focus range

The present invention relates to a digital camera that includes a wireless modem for transferring images via a wireless network. Before taking photos, the user can select various configuration settings, one of which uploads tagged images to a photo service provider or other website. If a network connection is not available when images are captured, the camera automatically wakes up later to check for network availability. If a suitable network connection is available, the camera operates in a reduced power state to upload the images from the camera. Data indicating whether or not each image has been uploaded and/or transferred via the wireless network is stored in the camera, and icons are displayed along with the images, to indicate to the user whether or not an image has been transferred to their computer or uploaded to their website.

Wireless camera with automatic wake-up and transfer capability and transfer status display

An electronic camera captures images representing a variety of subjects and categorizes the image according to subject matter. The camera comprises an image sensor for capturing an image, a converter stage for converting the image into digital image data, and a memory for storing a plurality of categories providing classification of the images by subject. A processor in the camera has the capability of assigning the plurality of categories to the images captured by the camera, with each category providing a subject classification for the images. A user selects one or more categories for a plurality of images prior to capture, and an output image signal is then generated including the digital image data corresponding to a captured image and the particular category selected by the user. The categories can be default identifiers stored in the memory, or can be names, text (i.e., account number), and/or graphics overlays (i.e., company logo) entered via a host computer and uploaded to the camera memory before the pictures are taken.

Electronic still camera for capturing and categorizing images

An electronic camera includes a sensor for capturing an image, an electronic image display for displaying the captured image, and a user interface for selectively enabling a quick view feature in which the image display is automatically turned on for a set period of time after an image is captured, and then automatically turned off, in order to quickly review the captured image. The camera further includes a processor for performing processing on the captured image and generating a processed image file therefrom, and a memory for storing the processed image file. When an erase command is provided to the processor, the processing of the image file is terminated and the partially completed image file is deleted from the second memory.
