A recoverable article comprises a recoverable fabric, means for rendering the fabric impervious, and a shaped liner. The assembly can be used to form a pressure resistant splice case for telecommunications cables.

Method for making recoverable article for encapsulation

An assembly capable of enclosing and sealing an intermediate section of an optical fiber includes a plurality of sealing mechanisms arranged such that the assembly can be entered to gain access to electronic components for servicing without affecting an environment occupied by optical fiber broken out of an optical fiber cable. Accordingly, physical integrity of the exposed fiber, and its associated connectors and splices, is not compromised. The assembly further includes a plurality of card cages, each of which has its own integral backplane having socket connectors which allow for connection to an adjacent card cage backplane within the assembly. During initial deployment of the assembly where less than all card cages for maximum capacity are initially required to be deployed, segmenting the backplane reduces the first installed cost of the assembly. Finally, multiple alarms are provided for the assembly to alert a central office that a cover of the assembly has been removed and a humidity level within a vicinity of the broken out fiber cable exceeds a predetermined level.

Recoverable article for encapsulation

A recoverable article comprising a recoverable fabric, optionally with a matrix material, is provided with a closure whereby it can be retained in the wrapped around configuration. The article is suitable for environmentally protecting cables and pipes and joins therein.

Wraparound recovery article

An electrical heater which has a conductive polymer resistive element and two laminar electrodes. The electrodes are shaped and positioned such that there is a continuous margin around the periphery of the resistive element on at least one surface. The margin is particularly useful in reducing arcing which may occur between the electrodes.

Laminar electrical heaters

A recoverable article comprises a fabric having zones of different or uniformly varying recovery forces or ratios. The fabric can be made impervious and used for environmental protection.

Method of environmental sealing

A heat recoverable article comprises a recoverable fabric and a polymeric layer of at least 0.03 mm thickness, and preferably unstressed. Such an article can be recovered by means of a torch to provide an environmental seal around substrates such as cables and pipes.

A recoverable article comprising a recoverable fabric having a recovery of at least 40% may be used for providing environmental protection.

Dimensionally heat-recoverable article

A heat-shrinkable article comprising (1) a heat-shrinkable layer of polymeric material, (2) a laminar heater which comprises a conductive polymer layer sandwiched between apertured metal electrodes and which is secured to the inner surface of the layer, and (3) a member which is secured to the inside of the heater and which protects a substrate from damage caused by the heater when the layer shrinks. The protective member (3) has a first shape before the layer shrinks and a second shape after the layer shrinks. The member possesses sufficient strength to resist piercing by the electrodes when the layer shrinks. Such articles are particularly useful for enclosing splices in telephone cables.

Heat-shrinkable article

Aluminum-shielded coaxial cable is repaired by using a wraparound metallic sheet, such as copper, having a contact means on the sheet, such as 'dragon skin' brass strips, and a sealing means, such as a mastic. The metallic sheet provides the electrical continuity and radio frequency shielding and the sealing means provides the environmental seal to prevent moisture from entering the opening in the aluminum shield. The sheet and contact means are held in position by compression means, such as clamps, and the sheet and compression means can then be covered with a wraparound heat-recoverable closure to protect the entire assembly.

Aluminum-shielded coaxial cable repair

A wraparound recoverable closure, wherein a portion of the closure is not recovered against a substrate, which has a flap to seal across the gap between the abutting edge portions of the closure. Where the closure does not recover against and contact a substrate, the flap does not seal adequately for some applications. This invention provides means for supporting the flap to improve the seal. The preferred embodiment is a bag inside the closure which contains a resilient liner which supplies pressure on the flap to seal the flap across said gap.
