A single step wet oxidation process for treating wastewaters containing organic species, with or without heteroatoms, and anions of strong acids, e.g. sulfate or phosphate ion, or cations of strong bases, e.g., sodium, potassium or calcium ions, and which may contain ammonium ion and/or nitrate ion in addition to added ammonium ion and/or nitrate ion was developed which on thermal treatment near the critical temperature of water removes substantially all the COD and nitrogen through conversion to water, carbon dioxide or carbonate species, nitrogen gas and small amounts of nitrous oxide. Key to the success of the process is the balancing of all reducing species with an equivalent amount of oxidizing species and the balancing of all strong acid anions with strong base cations and including at least 0.06 acetate ion for moles of nitrate in the wet oxidation process.

Treatment of water containing organic wastes with ammonium nitrate

The former ensures good removal of organic species, ammonium ion and nitrate ion. The latter ensures maintaining the pH in the range of from 1.5 to 8 thus avoiding severe corrosion problems and regions of pH where rate of reaction of the oxidizing species with reducing species is slow.

An extended-reach sewer inspection device involving a hose-driven apparatus for progressively inspecting and cleaning the inside of a pipe at remote locations. The apparatus is comprised of a hose that has a nozzle apparatus which includes rearwardly-directed non-axial orifices such nozzle is attached to a forwardly-extending axially-aligned male member that has a female proximal end connected to the hose and a distal end opposite of the hose. A skid that includes a central body with at least three pipe-engaging runners connected to it and an axially-aligned opening dimensioned to freely receive the male member in such a manner as to allow the member to rotate freely within the skid. A retainer is secured to the distal end of the male member to hold it in the central-body opening, and a video camera is affixed to the central body whereby non-rotating video images are available to assist in the inspection and cleaning of a pipe.

This invention relates to an improvement in a process for the production of an alkyl formamide, wherein a gas-containing carbon monoxide is reacted at elevated temperature and pressure in reaction zone with a nitrogen-containing compound selected from the group consisting of ammonia, a primary or secondary alkylamine, in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst. The improvement comprises utilizing a solvent comprising a polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylenepropylene glycol, or mixtures, and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkoxide of a polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyethylenepropylene glycol or mixtures as the catalyst.

Preparation of alkyl formamides

An improved process for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles. The basic process comprises contacting the nitrile with hydrogen in the presence of a sponge or Raney cobalt catalyst under conditions for effecting conversion of the nitrile group to the primary amine. The improvement in the hydrogenation process resides in effecting the hydrogenation in the presence of a catalytic amount of lithium hydroxide and water. To achieve a catalytic amount of lithium hydroxide, the catalyst may be pretreated with the lithium hydroxide and/or the reaction may be carried out with the lithium hydroxide present in the reaction medium.

Hydrogenation of nitriles to produce amines

Insoluble polymer formed during the distillation of N-vinylformamide is removed by contacting the insoluble polymer with an aqueous weakly basis solution in a closed system at elevated temperature. Polymer (up to 50 wt % polymer gel or 5.5 wt % dry polymer in reaction mixture) is treated with an aqueous solution of an amine, alkanolamine or weak inorganic base having a concentration of at least 1 molar. Solvents like alcohols, glycol ethers or amides may be added as a cosolvent in an amount of from 0 to about 85% by weight.

Process for removing insoluable N-vinyl amide polymer from equipment

This invention relates to a process for the separation of acrylonitrile used in the cyanoethylation of glycols to produce a bis(cyanoethylated) aliphatic glycol from the resulting glycol which is then reduced with hydrogen to produce the corresponding bis(aminopropoxy) alkane. In this process, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile is reacted with an aliphatic glycol in stoichiometric excess and the acrylonitrile removed from the cyanoethylated glycol by reaction with aliphatic primary or secondary alcohol prior to effecting the hydrogenation of the cyanoethylated aliphatic glycol in the presence of the acrylonitrile-amine reaction product. The reaction product then can be separated by conventional techniques such as distillation.

Process for the preparation of bis(aminopropoxy)alkanes

This invention relates to a process for the separation of acrylonitrile used in the cyanoethylation of glycols to produce a bis(cyanoethylated) aliphatic glycol from the resulting glycol which is then reduced with hydrogen to produce the corresponding bis(aminopropyl) aliphatic glycol. In this process, acrylonitrile is reacted with an aliphatic glycol in stoichiometric excess and the acrylonitrile removed from the cyanoethylated glycol by reaction with aliphatic primary or secondary amine prior to effecting the hydrogenation of the cyanoethylated aliphatic glycol in the presence of the acrylonitrile-amine reaction product. The reaction product then can be separated by conventional techniques such as distillation.

Process for the preparation of bis(aminopropyl)aliphatic glycols

This invention relates to a process for producing bis-[aminophenyl ketones] and the resulting compositions which are suitable for the preparation of engineering polymers, e.g., polyimides, polyurethanes and a host of other resinous materials. The bis-[aminophenyl ketones] are formed by reacting 2 moles of a nitrophenyl acid halide with an aromatic bridging composition having at least two hydrogen atoms of sufficient reactivity to undergo acylation reactions whereby nitrophenyl ketone groups are attached to the aromatic bridging group. The resulting bis-[nitrophenyl ketones] then are converted to the amine by hydrogenation or by double nucleophilic displacement with an aminophenol. The invention also relates to polyimides and polyamides prepared from such bis-[aminophenyl ketones].

Bis-[aminophenyl ketones] compounds

This invention relates to propylene-linked polyethylene polyamines and a process for preparing such propylene-linked polyethylene polyamines. These propylene-linked polyethylene polyamines are characterized as having high molecular weight and the amine value is distributed over a wide range of primary, secondary, and tertiary amine functionality. The propylene-linked polyethylene polyamines are prepared by reacting a polyamine containing an ethylene amine functionality with acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile to form a cyanoethylated polyamine containing the ethylene linkage and then reductively alkylating the resulting cyanoethylated derivative in the presence of a polyamine containing an ethylene linkage. Typically, a polyethylene polyamine such as diethylenetriamine or triethylene tetramine is reacted with acrylonitrile and then hydrogenated under reductive alkylation conditions.

Propylene-linked polyethylene polyamines and a process for making same

This invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of cyanoalkyl lactams by the reaction of an unsaturated nitrile with a lactam, said cyanoalkyl lactam of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is H, or methyl, R.sub.1 is H, methyl or ethyl and n is a number ranging from 2-11 and wherein each of the methylene groups may carry a lower alkyl substituent as shown. The improvement comprises: reacting said lactam with an alpha-beta unsaturated nitrile having from 3-6 carbon atoms in the presence of a catalytic amount of a diazabicycloalkene of the formula ##STR2## wherein R, R.sub.1 and n have the above meaning. Typically, acrylonitrile is reacted with .epsilon.-caprolactam in the presence of diazabicycloundecene.

Catalytic preparation of cyanoalkyl lactams

This invention relates to a process for producing ethylene diamine in high selectivity and high conversion by reacting monoethanolamine with ammonia in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst which permits the production of ethylenediamine in high selectivity and high conversion is a hydrogen mordenite catalyst that has been treated in such a manner as to raise the silicon to aluminum ratio of the mordenite, such treatment, then being referred to as partial dealumination.

The present invention relates to a process for the reduction of the color of polyamines by reacting at elevated temperature, i.e. 50.degree. to 175.degree. C., and pressure, i.e. 50 to 1500 psig, such colored polyamines, e.g. triethylenetetramine or tetraethylenepentamine, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. Raney nickel or palladium on carbon, and a hydrogen atmosphere for a period of time sufficient to effectuate the desired reduction in color. In the process of the present invention, the polyamines can either be distilled into a narrow product composition and then hydrogenated or a crude polyamine product can be hydrogenated and then distilled to produce the desired product composition.

Color reduction of polyamines by mild catalytic hydrogenation

This invention pertains to an improved process for preparing noncyclic polyalkylene polyamine compounds in high selectivity by reacting an alkanolamine and an alkylene amine in the presence of an inert gas and an acidic catalyst. The improvement resides in effecting the reaction under fixed bed catalytic conditions and maintaining the reaction conditions such that a vapor phase condition exists for the reaction mixture comprising both reactants and products. To accomplish the formation of vapor phase conditions sufficient inert gas is injected into the feedstream along with alkanolamine and alkylene amine so that the dew point temperature of the reaction product mix is below the reaction temperature at reaction pressure.
