A method for the recovery and recycling of sodium hydroxide from the waste solution of aluminum etching operations. The method utilizes a dialysis membrane column or stack to initially remove sodium hydroxide from the waste solution and return it to the etch tank base solution sufficiently concentrated to carry on the basic etching operation. The method permits the recovery of salable quantities of aluminum hydroxide.

A method and apparatus for generating acid and base regenerant solutions by utilization of a bipolar membrane electrodialysis stack. A mineral-containing salt solution is continuously circulated through the stack to produce a partially demineralized salt solution, an acid solution and a base solution. The acid solution and base solution are continuously circulated through the stack to increase the concentration thereof. The circulating salt solution is controlled to maintain the salt concentration in the range of 2% to 25% and the pH in the range of 8-11. The concentrations of the circulating acid solution and base solution are controlled to maintain the concentrations thereof in the range of 0.2N to 3.0N. The concentrated acid solution and base solution are utilized to regenerate exhausted ion-exchange resins.

An air/water distributor underdrain assembly for providing a uniform distribution and metering of backwash air and/or water through a filter bed. The distributor assembly includes a distributor member which defines a distributor chamber for receipt of backwash air and/or water thereinto. A plurality of first and second spaced apart openings extend through the distributor member. A shroud extends downwardly into the distributor chamber from each of the first openings in fluid communication with an intermediate portion of the distributor chamber for directing backwash water therethrough. Backwash air collected in a gas compartment formed in an upper portion of the distributor chamber is directed through the second openings.

This invention deals with a method for deasphalting heavy oils by mixing the oil with a completely miscible solvent at a low treat ratio and then subjecting the resulting one phase mixture to a gaseous antisolvent, such as carbon dioxide, to separate the mixture into two phases. The present invention relates to a process for the recovery of hydrocarbon oils from other heavier oils such as vacuum residua and, more particularly, to an improved process for deasphalting petroleum oils containing those asphalts. In one aspect of the invention, the process treats a solvent which has contacted the heavy oil with a gaseous antisolvent to separate effectively and usually without distillation, the solvent from the extracted oil. The deasphalted oil product typically will have low metals contaminants and enhanced MCR. Utilities or energy requirements for the process may be improved over prior art processes.

A rigid, shaped, mass support system, such as support or seating appliances for disabled or handicapped persons, is provided by charging a flexible container (2) made of elastic polymeric film with a uniform mixture of rigid particles of a mesh size relatively small compared to the size of the system and a curable adhesive polymeric binder material. The charged container (2) and its contents are molded to adapt to or fit the shape of the mass, such as the contour of that portion of the body to be supported, and evacuated to remove volatiles and fix the shape of the contents of the container. The adhesive binder is then cured to solidify the molded contents of the container to form a composite, from which the polymeric film can be stripped away, after which an adhesive paint is applied to seal and protect the surface.

A process for preparing artificial red cells comprising microdroplets of aqueous, stroma-free hemoglobin solution encapsulated in membranes of polymerized hemoglobin, said process comprising forming microdroplets of hemoglobin solution in a continuous oil phase, cross-linking the hemoglobin at the surface of the microdroplets with a suitable cross-linking agent to form the artificial red cells and recovering the cells. In one embodiment, a liquid membrane encapsulation technique employing a water-soluble cross-linking agent is used to form the cells. In another embodiment an oil-soluble cross-linking agent is present in the oil phase containing the hemoglobin microdroplets.

A hemoperfusion device is disclosed for the specific modification or removal of components of whole blood. The device involves a 3-dimensional arrangement of fibers within a housing arranged to provide maximum exposed fiber surface and flow-channel diameter, while also reducing the tortuosity of the flow path. Desired effector molecules are bound to the fibers to allow them to contact the target components of the blood, whereby to remove the target components. Details of the fiber and effector molecules are disclosed and a specific device is described.
