The present invention relates to a method and system for providing biological detection. The system includes: at least one polymodal sensor for collectively detecting at least two conditions; and at least one node, each node including at least one of the polymodal sensors. The system also includes at least one data collector; each data collector communicating with one or more of the at least one node, and each data collector storing local information in a local knowledge base; and at least one server, each server communicating with one or more of the at least one data collector, and each server updating a global knowledge base. The at least two conditions are utilized in detecting the presence of biological activity from either one or both knowledge bases.

Polymodal biological detection system

A radially soft drive coupling for reducing vibration transmitted across the coupling in certain marine drive applications. The elastomeric elements interconnecting the hub and housing are precompressed by an amount which is at least in the range of 15-20% to produce significant radial and torsional softening of the spring rate of the elastomer. The radial spring rate whose magnitude expressed in lb/in is in the range of between one half and three times the magnitude of said design torque level expressed in lb-in.

Precompressed, radially soft drive coupling

A bonded component (126) adapted for insertion in a housing (120) thus forming a mount (118). The bonded component (126) includes an inner member (128) including a outer periphery (129) having a preferably non-planar profile along its width and an elastomer (130) bonded thereto. The elastomer (130) includes a first arcuate section (142) extending through a first arc (.theta..sub.1) and having first and second lateral faces (150a-c), a second arcuate section (142') extending through a second arc (.theta..sub.2) also having first and second lateral faces (150b-d), notches (148a-d) formed in first and second lateral faces of each of said first and second arcuate sections, the notches only extending part way across each of said sections. In another aspect, the location of the notches (148a-d) are vertically and/or angularly offset from said fore-and-aft axis (146). Bottom trough portions (149a-d) of the notches are preferably oriented such that they intersect preferably cylindrical peripheral faces (151a, 151b) of the arcuate sections 142, 142' at approximately a 45 degree angle.

Mount and bonded component therefor with shape factor reducing notches

A mount for isolating a vibrating member from its support. An elastomeric element is made up of four components that are preferably bonded to the inclined outer surface of an inner member and the inclined inner surface of an outer member. One of the inner and outer members is bifurcated and drawing the two halves into mating engagement results in the elastomeric components being preloaded simultaneously in compression and shear. The elastomeric element is preferably formed with portions which snub movement in each of three orthogonal directions. The dimensions of the pair of elastomeric components above or below the vibrating member may be different than the other pair since the greater compression strain on one pair of components will make its stiffness characteristics more critical to determining the effective stiffness of the mount.

Isolating mount with preloaded elastomeric components

A bushing style mount with low stiffness in two directions oriented with one of the low stiffness directions vertically to provide better isolation. Two elastomeric layers are bonded to two non-parallel surfaces of an inner member, on the one hand, and to a pair of plates on the other. Each of the plates has a contoured, non-planar configuration which increases the axial stiffness of the mount so that the truck cab's lateral motion is minimized. The inner member's non-parallel surfaces are also non-planar, preferably matching the non-planar configuration of the plates, such that the bonded elastomer is deflected into a vee configuration, for example. The inner member with the two elastomeric layers bonded thereto with the two plates bonded, in turn, to the outer faces of the elastomer, form a subassembly that is installed into a generally cylindrical housing. The housing and the outside faces of the plates have a mating contour which provides an alignment feature. For example, the housing may have a pair of inward protrusions which may take the form of darts formed in the tubular housing that engage in notches on the back sides of the two plates. The inner dimension of the housing is less than the maximum outer dimension of the subassembly such that the plates are deflected inward by the inner diameter of the housing compressing the elastomeric layers, while the darts engage in the locator notches. The inward deflection of the plates preloads the elastomeric members in both shear and compression. While this precompression may lie in the range of between 5% and 20% of the elastomeric member's pre-installed thickness, it is more preferably in the 10% to 15% range. The preload enhances durability and the notches perform a locator function as the mount functions during the cab tilt process.

Self-aligning vibration mount with compound-angled flexing elements

A drive coupling is fail-safed by providing an inner metallic member with a pair of machined opposing flat surfaces that can engage a pair of pins that are positioned in pockets in the intermediate elastomeric member. These pins are anchored in place with respect to the outer housing by staking the ends of the pins, or the like.

Fail-safe shear elastomeric coupling

A mounting assembly (20) which includes dissimilar radial spring rates in the various radial directions by varying the socket geometry and dimensional characteristics of a receiving member (22) for accepting a standard round cross-section, center-bonded mounting (21). A reduction in spring rate in the range of between 1.25 and 2.5 times can be achieved by modifying the socket geometry to provide superior lateral vibration isolation, yet, a standard center-bonded mounting still can be utilized providing cost effective applications.
