An interface device includes an on-panel pad and a sensor controller. The interface device is used to perform an input to an electronic device in response to an operation by a user on a capacitive touch panel display of the electronic device. The on-panel pad causes sensor electrodes included in the touch panel display to generate a two-dimensional pattern of capacitance while the on-panel pad is on the touch panel display. When the two-dimensional pattern generated while the on-panel pad is on the touch panel display has been detected, the sensor controller generates or outputs data including operation information in response to a change in capacitance in a region that is associated with the two-dimensional pattern and that receives an operation of the on-panel pad, the operation information indicating an operation state of the on-panel pad.

Disclosed is a pointer position detection method for detecting, using a touch sensor including a plurality of sensor electrodes, a touch position indicated by a passive pointer that does not transmit a signal and a pen position indicated by an active pen configured to transmit a downlink signal from a pen electrode disposed in a distal end of the active pen, the pointer position detection method performed by a sensor controller connected to the touch sensor. The pointer position detection method includes: detecting one or more candidate pen positions based on a level of the downlink signal in each of the plurality of sensor electrodes; determining the pen position in an active region at least partially surrounded by a bezel region of a display device from the one or more candidate pen positions; and detecting a gesture performed by the active pen in the bezel region of the display device.

A pointer position detection method includes detecting one or more candidate touch positions by detecting one or more changes in capacitances in a touch sensor, detecting one or more candidate pen positions based on a level of a downlink signal in each of a plurality of sensor electrodes, and determining a pen position from the one or more candidate pen positions, in which each of the one or more candidate pen positions having a corresponding candidate touch position that has not been detected is not determined as the pen position.
