Components of medical devices include polypropylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PP-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations. The base polymeric formulations comprise at least a polymer or co-polymer of propylene. These components are suitable for solvent-bonding with other components and enhance bond strength of the medical devices.

Enhancing bond strength of medical devices

Components of medical devices include polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PE-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations. The base polymeric formulations comprise at least a polymer or co-polymer of ethylene. These components are suitable for solvent-bonding with other components and enhance bond strength of the medical devices.

Catheter tubing comprises: an elongate body comprising a base thermoplastic polyurethane; and a compounded thermoplastic polyurethane co-extruded with the base thermoplastic polyurethane to provide a section of catheter tubing discrete from the elongate body, the compounded thermoplastic polyurethane comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane and a radiopaque material, wherein the catheter tubing comprises a first elastic modulus under first conditions prior to entry into a patient; and wherein when exposed to second conditions comprising two or more in vivo stimuli for a duration of time the catheter tubing comprises a second elastic modulus that is not more than fifty percent of the first modulus.

Amphiphilic graft copolymers comprise a polypropylene backbone and hybrid micromolecule side-chains based on organo-functional silanes (PP-g-XSiOA) in the presence of a co-agent, for example, difunctional metallic diacrylate monomers, where 'X' is an organic group or an organo-functional group, and 'A' is a metal, an inorganic oxide, an inorganic hydroxide, or any other inorganic material. X may be derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of epoxy, amino, acrylate, methacryloxy, and vinyl; and A is selected from the group consisting of: silicon, (Si), aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), tin (Sn); oxides thereof; hydroxides thereof; and mixtures of the foregoing. These copolymers are suitable for forming medical devices and/or as additives to base polymeric formulations for medical devices for improving laser marking, antimicrobial resistance, adhesive free bond strength, paintability and dyeability.

Amphiphilic graft copolymers and medical devices with enhanced bond strength

Films for medical devices and/or packaging include polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymers (PE-g-PEO) in their base polymer formulations of polyethylene and poly(ethylene oxide). The films may be treated to include a nitric-oxide releasing agent incorporated into the PE-g-PEO. Also, microbial agents for inclusion in medical devices are provided, which comprise: an olefin-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer, wherein a portion of the poly(ethylene oxide) comprises end groups converted to a nitric oxide-releasing agent. The amphiphilic graft copolymer of the microbial agents may comprise a polyethylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer (PE-g-PEO), a polypropylene-poly(ethylene oxide) amphiphilic graft copolymer (PP-g-PEO), or mixtures thereof.

Breathable films with microbial barrier properties

A polymer resin composition is disclosed including a chemically attached lubricant structure to produce a self-lubricating medical device thereby eliminating the need of a secondary lubrication step currently required which is useful in medical and surgical devices.

Principles and embodiments of the present invention relate generally to thermoplastic polyurethane materials having controlled and improved stiffness and/or flexibility, and methods to prepare them. The thermoplastic polyurethanes described herein having superior stiffness and softening properties may be fabricated into film, tubing, and other forms of medical devices. The thermoplastic polyurethanes comprise: an aromatic diisocyanate excluding non-aromatic diisocyanates; at least one polyglycol; and a chain extender comprising at least one side-chain branching diol and excluding linear diols.

Thermoplastic polyurethane materials for forming medical devices

Medical devices comprise a polymeric body comprising: a base polymeric formulation comprising at least a polymer or co-polymer of propylene; and an additive comprising a copolymer having a polypropylene backbone and hybrid micromolecule side-chains based on organo-functional silanes (PP-g-XSiOA) in the presence of a co-agent, for example, difunctional metallic diacrylate monomers, where 'X' is an organic group or an organo-functional group, and 'A' is a metal, an inorganic oxide, an inorganic hydroxide, or any other inorganic material. X may be derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of epoxy, amino, acrylate, methacryloxy, and vinyl; and A is selected from the group consisting of: silicon, (Si), aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), tin (Sn); oxides thereof; hydroxides thereof; and mixtures of the foregoing. Optionally, inorganic fillers may be included. The medical devices are laser markable.

Laser markable medical devices

Medical devices comprise a polymeric body comprising: a base polymeric formulation comprising at least a polymer or co-polymer of propylene; and an additive comprising a copolymer having a polypropylene backbone and hybrid micromolecule side-chains based on organo-functional silanes (PP-g-XSiOA) in the presence of a co-agent, for example, difunctional metallic diacrylate monomers, where 'X' is an organic group or an organo-functional group, and 'A' is a metal, an inorganic oxide, an inorganic hydroxide, or any other inorganic material. X may be derived from a compound selected from the group consisting of epoxy, amino, acrylate, methacryloxy, and vinyl; and A is selected from the group consisting of: silicon, (Si), aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), silver (Ag), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), tin (Sn); oxides thereof; hydroxides thereof; and mixtures of the foregoing. Antimicrobial agents are included in the polymeric body. The medical devices have enhanced antimicrobial properties.

Antimicrobial medical devices

Amphiphilic graft copolymers comprise a polypropylene backbone and polyoxyalkylene side-chains (PPMA-g-PEO-PPO). These copolymers are suitable as additives to base polymeric formulations for medical devices for improving bond strength, paintability, dyeability, and printablity.

Amphiphilic graft copolymers

A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer is described. A process to make amphiphilic graft copolymers via grafting either poly(ethylene oxide) or polylactide side chains onto an EVA platform using oxo-anion ring-opening polymerization chemistry is also described. Polyethylene or polypropylene based graft copolymers are prepared starting from poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) or maleic anhydride grafted isotactic polypropylene respectively. The amphiphilic character will result from the incorporation of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side-chains. Various applications of the novel amphiphilic graft copolymer are also described including, but not limited to, thermoplastic elastomer, films, fibers, fabrics, gels, breathable packaging materials, additive for biodegradable system, surfactant, antistatic additives, polymer compatibilizers, phase transfer catalysts, solid polymer electrolytes, biocompatible polymers, or incorporation into the materials listed above.
