The present invention provides an optical sensor unit () for measuring gas concentration, comprising: sensor means () and first thermal insulation means () at least partially surrounding said sensor means (). The sensor means () includes at least one sensing layer () adapted to be irradiated with a predetermined radiation (), and at least one gas-permeable layer () adjacent to one side of the at least one sensing layer () and adapted to pass gas, which concentration is to measured, through the gas-permeable layer () towards the at least one sensing layer (). The optical sensor unit () is adapted to measure an optical response of the at least one sensing layer (), which optical response depends on the gas concentration.

Sensor for determining gas concentration

A device for measuring a geometry of a fluid meniscus includes a fluid chamber storing a first electrically conductive fluid and a second electrically insulating fluid. The fluids are mutually immiscible and define a fluid meniscus in between them. The device further includes a main electrowetting electrode and auxiliary electrowetting electrodes for controlling the geometry of the fluid meniscus. A voltage source provides a voltage between the main electrowetting electrode and the auxiliary electrowetting electrodes and a measurement circuit separately measures capacitances between the main electrowetting electrode and at least two of the auxiliary electrowetting electrodes. The measurement circuit includes a multiplexer for demodulating a signal indicative for the capacitances.

Device for measuring a fluid meniscus

The invention relates to a sensing system for sensing a substance in a fluid. The sensing system comprises a sensing site () at which the substance is to be sensed and a reference site (). A signal generation unit generates a sensing signal by sensing the sensing site () and a reference signal by sensing the reference site (). The reference signal is used for normalizing the sensing signal, wherein the sensing site () and the reference site () are arranged such that a drift variation of the normalized sensing signal is within a noise variation of the normalized sensing signal. This improves the accuracy of the normalized sensing signal.

Sensing system for sensing a substance in a fluid

A sensor device and a method for the determination of the amount of target particles at a contact surface adjacent to a sample chamber include detecting, by a detector, the target particles in the sample chamber by a sensor element, and providing at least one corresponding sensor signal. An evaluation unit determines the amount of target particles in a first zone at the contracts surface and in a second zone a distance away from the contact surface based on this sensor signal. In an optical measurement approach, frustrated total internal reflection taking place under different operating conditions, such as wavelength and/or angle of incidence, may be used to extract information about the first and second zones. In a magnetic measurement approach, different magnetic excitation fields may be used to excite magnetic target particles differently in the first and second zone.

Sensor device for target particles in a sample

The invention relates to a method of monitoring a vital parameter of a patient by measuring attenuation of light emitted onto tissue of the patient, comprising the following steps: modulating the light with a modulation frequency or/and a modulation code; emitting the modulated light onto the tissue of the patient; collecting light which is transmitted through the tissue or/and which is reflected from the tissue; demodulating the collected light; analyzing the demodulated collected light with regard to interference with ambient light; determining a modulation frequency or/and a modulation code for which interference with the ambient light is minimized or falls under a predefined threshold; and setting the modulation frequency or/and the modulation code for modulating the light according to the determined modulation frequency or/and a modulation code for which interference with the ambient light is minimized or falls under a predefined threshold. In this way a versatile and reliable possibility of monitoring a vital parameter of a patient with a high signal-to-interference ratio is provided.

When writing data to an optic disc with a constant linear velocity, and encountering a disc error, data is written into the defect management area of the disc without changing the rotational speed of the disc, or at least without changing the rotational speed of the disc sufficiently to maintain a constant linear velocity. This allows an increase in the rate at which data may be written to the optical disc. It also avoids or reduces the need for the rotational speed of the disc to be changed, which allows a further improvement in the time taken to write data to the disc. In order to continue writing data to the disc without changing the rotational speed, the data rate must be increased while writing to the defect management area. For this to be possible, the data must be written into an 'iced' or unformatted part of the defect management area.

Writing data to an optical disc

A wobble signal is generated from at least two elementary signals (A,B,C,D) detected by scanning a wobbled track of a data carrier. The invention proposes a solution for eliminating the noise of various origins in the wobble signal, notably the high frequency data leakage into the wobble signal due to radial asymmetry introduced in the diffraction pattern on the detector, whatever the reason for this radial asymmetry. According to the invention, the at least two elementary signals are filtered with at least an adaptive filter (), and said filtered elementary signals are subtracted () from said wobble signal (PP) thereby generating an improved wobble signal.

Method for processing a wobble signal

The waveform equalizer () for obtaining a corrected signal S' by performing a waveform equalization to a read signal S read out from an information carrier (). The waveform equalizer () has a first filter () able to perform a filtering process to said read signal S, and an amplitude limiting means () able to obtain an amplitude limited read signal SLIM by limiting an amplitude level of said read signal S by a predetermined amplitude limitation value. A second filter () is provided which is able to perform a filtering process to said amplitude limited read signal SLIM. Further, an adder () is present which is able to add the signals obtained by performing the filtering process by each of said first () and second filters (), able to generate an addition result as said corrected read signal S&#x2032;. The signal frequency response of said waveform equalizer () to signals having an amplitude smaller than said predetermined amplitude limitation value, has a notch in a first frequency region from zero to a frequency at which the signal frequency response is at a maximum amplitude. The apparatus for reproducing information recorded on an information carrier (), having the waveform equalizer () is able to read the information with a higher S/N ratio and a lower data jitter. As a result the information reproducing apparatus can be applied for a higher bit density and at the same time having a acceptable S/N ratio and data jitter.

Waveform equalizer for obtaining a corrected signal and apparatus for reproducing information

An arrangement is disclosed for receiving a digital signal from a transmission medium. The arrangement comprises a variable equalizer for equalizing a received signal so as to obtain an equalized signal, and bit-detector for detecting a sequence of bits from the equalized signal. The arrangement further comprises an asynchronous sampling unit for sampling a received analog signal so as to obtain a first signal having asynchronous samples. To control the variable equalizer a control signal is generated from the values of at least one sample of a signal having asynchronous samples, at either side of a zero crossing in signal.
