The present invention provides a correction for fiber optic gyro drift rate error due to temperature effects based on either the temperature difference between the gyro housing and the sensor spool, or the rate of change of spool temperature. Although gyro drift rate error due to rates of temperature change are virtually unavoidable, adjustments can be made by sensing gyro temperature and calculating the required correction factor. This type of compensation is suited to high accuracy gyros when thermal disturbances are small, or to low accuracy gyros even when thermal disturbances are relatively large. Implementation of this method of compensation requires the development of appropriate electronic circuits to provide the required temperature correction to gyro output.

Fiber optic gyro drift rate compenstion based on temperature

A solid state laser comprises a housing having a body portion for enclosing optical components thereof. A mounting means is provided for mounting the optical components directly to the housing. The housing has stiffness sufficient for spatial and angular positioning of the optical components. A cooling means transfers heat from the optical components to the housing by circulation of a preselected gas therewithin.

A gyro having a liquid hydrostatic bearing includes an integral liquid hydrostatic suspended pendulum arrangement which senses the direction of the gravity vector of the gyro housing. The configuration described provides close coupling of the hydrostatically suspended pendulum arrangement, which is in effect a level sensor, and the gyro input axis, the same being essential to precise gyrocompassing applications.

An accurate level sensor having an electrolytic switch 10 is mounted within a chamber 22 on a thermally insulating member 12 and is surrounded by a thermally insulating air space 23. Chamber 22 is mounted within a chamber 24 by thermally insulating members 38 and is surrounded by a thermally insulating air space 25. Chamber 24 is mounted to an inertial reference member 44 by thermally insulating members 46. All mounting surfaces are precisely parallel to each other and sensitivity to ambient temperature conditions is attenuated to provide a sensor for maintaining the inertial reference member level and stable within a high degree of accuracy.
