The cooperative controlling of an operation of an application that is used by a user equipment is implemented in a wireless network by obtaining scheduled shared resource rate information and channel condition information for bearers sharing network resources. User equipment policies for the user equipment associated with the bearers can be performed based on the scheduled shared resource rate information, the channel condition information, and available video rate information in order to invoke throughput restrictions for the user equipment. The user equipment policies can be used by application functions to cooperatively control the operation of applications among a number of user equipments.

System and method for cooperatively controlling an application

A virtual personal computer is implemented in a communication system comprising a plurality of central offices each of which communicates with a plurality of client devices over a corresponding access network. A given one of the central offices comprises at least one compute server and at least one storage server. The virtual personal computer is configured by allocating physical processing resources of the compute server and physical storage resources of the storage server to that virtual personal computer. User access is provided to the virtual personal computer via one of the client devices. The virtual personal computer can be dynamically reconfigured by altering the allocation of at least one of the physical processing resources and the physical storage resources to the given virtual personal computer responsive to particular applications selected by the user to run on the given virtual personal computer.

Techniques are disclosed for reducing channel information feedback in communication networks. For example, a method comprises the following steps. A set of mobile terminals and a set of base stations designated to participate in a coordinated multipoint transmission protocol in a communication network are identified. One or more unique downlink communication resource blocks are assigned to each designated mobile terminal that is located in a given first sector of a designated base station. As such, each designated mobile terminal in the first sector of the designated base station: (i) performs a channel state estimation process in response to respective signals received from the designated base stations in the one or more unique downlink communication resource blocks assigned to that designated mobile terminal; and (ii) transmits resulting channel state information back to at least one of the designated base stations.

Each data packet in the plurality of data packets includes a plurality of coded cellular signals. The method includes establishing at least one radio bearer between at least two devices in the first network according to the first protocol, receiving at least one voice packet that conforms to the second protocol, modifying the at least one voice packet to conform to the first and the second protocols, and transmitting the at least one modified voice packet using the at least one radio bearer.

Extended cellular telephony protocol

Cellular signals or other wireless signals/messages are introduced into a building or to an outside location by transmitting packets corresponding to those signals over a data network and low cost cables to designated locations within the data network. Once the designated packets containing the signals reach the destination, they are then broadcast over the air to a terminal capable of receiving the wireless message. In a first embodiment, an in-building gigabit Ethernet network, such as that currently existing presently in many buildings, is used to distribute radio signals indoors. Instead of transmitting the radio signals over the air from a repeater connected to a base station, coded baseband signals generated by the coding processor (e.g., a CDMA Modem Unit) in the base station are packetized and sent over the Ethernet network to radio processing equipment and antennas distributed throughout the building. The radio processing equipment strips the packet headers from the baseband signal packets so those signals can be broadcast via the antennas to one or more mobile terminals.

The present invention provides a method is provided for soft vertical handovers. The method includes requesting a handover from a first wireless network that operates according to a first protocol to a second wireless network that operates according to a second protocol, the first protocol being different than the second protocol, via a first wireless telecommunication link that operates according to the first protocol. The method also includes forming, in response to the handover request, a second wireless telecommunications link according to the first and second protocols, the second wireless telecommunications link being concurrent with the first wireless telecommunication link. The method further includes dropping the first wireless telecommunications link after forming the second wireless telecommunications link.

The present invention provides methods for detecting a wireless air interface. The method includes receiving information indicative of at least one wireless access type, determining whether the information indicative of the at least one wireless access type is within an expected range, performing at least one first measurement associated with a first air interface in response to determining that the information indicative of the at least one wireless access type is within the expected range, and performing at least one second measurement associated with a second air interface in response to determining that the information indicative of the at least one wireless access type is not within the expected range.

An improved method and system for two way communications between multimedia providers and subscribers utilizes encryption technology for embedding a watermark containing specific data, or a pointer to specific data relating to a multimedia program in the principal program itself. The principal program may include, but is certainly not limited to a television broadcast, cable or satellite program, multimedia over the Internet, a paging service, or radio broadcast. The specific data may include web addresses, hyperlinks, telephone numbers, advertisements or any information related to the principal program. A decoder decodes the embedded data which may point to the related data stored in a database, or may include the related data. The related data is then delivered to the subscriber of the principal program through an appropriate medium, such ADSI, Internet, or radio. The subscriber receives the specific data, which may be delivered simultaneous with the delivery of the principal program, on an appropriate device, such as an ADSI enabled telephone, remote control or wireless telephone, or directly in a web browser. The specific data may also be available for retrieval at a later time. The decoding of the embedded data may occur at the subscriber's receiver, or preferably at a central location, such as the head end of a cable operator, satellite transmitter or Internet service provider.

A receiver for receiving wireless packetized audio signals having packet headers, and packet payloads including encoded audio signals is provided. The receiver includes an audio decoder for decoding the encoded audio signals into digital audio signals, an audio error detector for detecting impulsive noise in the digital audio signals caused by corrupted payload packets, and a digital signal restoration unit for removing the impulsive noise from the digital audio signals. Further, a method of noise reduction includes the steps of receiving radio frequency packetized audio signals having packet headers, and packet payloads including encoded audio signals and demodulating the RF signals. The method further includes decoding the encoded audio signals into digital audio signals and detecting impulsive noise in the digital audio signals caused by corrupted payload packets. The method further includes removing the impulsive noise by reconstructing the corrupted digital audio signal.

System and method of noise reduction in receiving wireless transmission of packetized audio signals

The present invention is a system and method for automated position location using RF signposting. The present invention comprises a plurality of transmitting units placed throughout a service area. Each transmitting unit repeatedly transmits a signal including position information related to a position associated with the transmitting unit. The position information may be an absolute position or an encoded position based on the structure of a building in which the transmitting unit is located. A receiving unit receives the signal transmitted from a transmitting unit and determines the position of the receiving unit, based on the received indication. The transmitting units are placed to provide uniform coverage of the service area, thus providing position location indoors and in urban areas where GPS does not function properly.

A time-division-multiplexed fixed wireless loop system and methods therefor are disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of cells each having a base station and a plurality of terminals. The base station includes a steerable and adjustable multibeam antenna for communicating with each of the terminals, which have fixed antennas. A cell controller associated with each base station allocates communication time slots so as to minimize mutual interference between base station/terminal links sharing the same time slot.
