A system and method indicate capability for detecting methane leaks inside buildings. This approach provides the ability to detect methane behind high efficiency coated windows and can extract methane concentration (rather than concentration-path length product CL). Lock-in imaging technologies can facilitate lower laser transmitter power. A field deployable, hand held prototype sensor for use in remote sensing a appropriate standoff distances can support operational testing. Distance infrared imaging of methane is feasible. Fully characterized real time image of a methane cloud offers operational advantages in accuracy and safety as compared to current sensors.

Laser imaging of gases for concentration and location identification

Disclosed herein are systems and devices for use in determining a level of a trait in an agriculture or food product sample. Further disclosed is a portable spectrometer system coupled with chemometric analysis methods to determine a level of a trait in an agriculture or food product sample, the portable spectrometer system comprising: a spectrometer; a sample stage adjacent the spectrometer; a motor coupled to the sample stage; and a system housing enclosing the motor and the spectrometer; wherein rotation of the motor rotates the sample stage, and wherein the motor is controllable in response to spectroscopy requirements.

Portable spectrometer system and methods for determining nutritional and quality traits

An apparatus for light detection includes a light, or photon, detector assembly and a dielectric resonator layer coupled to the detector assembly. The dielectric resonator layer is configured to receive transmission of incident light that is directed into the detector assembly by the dielectric resonator layer. The dielectric resonator layer resonates with a range of wavelengths of the incident light.

An open circuit voltage photodetector comprises a photovoltaic device including a photovoltaic junction, and a transistor. The photovoltaic device is connected to the gate terminal of the transistor to input an open circuit voltage of the photovoltaic device to the gate terminal. An array of such photodetectors and a readout integrated circuit forms an image sensor. In a photodetection method, an open circuit voltage is generated in a photovoltaic device in response to illumination by incident radiation, and the open circuit voltage is applied to a gate terminal of a transistor to modulate a channel current flowing in a channel of the transistor. A readout electronic circuit may be fabricated with an extra transistor, and a photovoltaic device disposed on the readout electronic circuit and electrically connected to apply an open circuit voltage of the photovoltaic device to a gate of the extra transistor.

Open circuit voltage photodetector

A lateral interband Type II engineered (LITE) detector is provided. LITE detectors use engineered heterostructures to spatially separate electrons and holes into separate layers. The device may have two configurations, a positive intrinsic (PIN) configuration and a BJT (Bipolar junction transistor) configuration. The PIN configuration may have a wide bandgap (WBG) layer that transports the holes above a narrow bandgap (NBG) absorber layer that absorbs the target radiation and transports the electrons. The BJT configuration may have a WBG layer operating as a BJT above an NBG layer. In both configurations, the LITE design uses a Type II staggered offset between the NBG layers and the WBG layers that provides a built-in field for the holes to drift from an absorber region to a transporter region.

A process for creating a stabilized diode laser device is disclosed, where the stabilized diode laser device includes a unibody mounting plate and several chambers aligned along a transmission axis. Various optic components are placed in the chambers, and based on a transmission through the chambers, the optic components are aligned and secured within the chambers.

An apparatus for extracting a material from a liquid includes a concentration stage having a filter, a first path from the filter, and a second path from the filter. Under this configuration, the concentration stage accepts an initial liquid volume. A first liquid not having material collected by the filter is passed along the first path, and concentrated liquid having material therein, which is entrapped by the filter, is directed to the second path. The apparatus also includes an aerosolizing stage coupled to the concentration stage that converts the concentrated liquid into an aerosol and a drying stage that dries the aerosol such that material extracted from the aerosol onto a material substrate.

Extraction of materials from liquids

A stabilized diode laser device is disclosed, which includes a unibody mounting plate that is mated mechanically to a thermoelectric cooler. The unibody mounting plate comprises chambers in which components, including a laser diode, are aligned and secured. A combination of the secured components within the unibody mounting plate, along with the thermoelectric cooler, provides stabilization of the laser diode.

A liquid transfer line receives a liquid having particles suspended therein and transfers the liquid to a capillary tube. A support tube secures the capillary tube therein. The support tube is substantially airtight except at a designated position. An optional securement secures the capillary tube within the support tube. A discharge end of the capillary tube is spaced from, and receded into, a discharge end of the support tube. A chuck is positioned below the support tube and is operable to open and to close to seal the designated position of the support tube. A sample substrate filters the liquid introduced through the liquid transfer line. Yet further, the sample preparation system comprises a pump that draws a vacuum that exhausts portions of the liquid that are not retained on the sample substrate.

Particle sample preparation with filtration

An apparatus for extracting a material from a liquid includes a concentration stage having a tangential flow filter, a first path from the tangential flow filter, and a second path from the tangential flow filter. Under this configuration, the concentration stage accepts an initial liquid volume. A first liquid not having material collected by the tangential flow filter is passed along the first path, and concentrated liquid having material therein, which is entrapped by the filter, is directed to the second path. The apparatus also includes an aerosolizing stage coupled to the concentration stage that converts the concentrated liquid into an aerosol and a drying stage that dries the aerosol such that material extracted from the aerosol onto a material substrate.

A Raman silent substrate includes a base and a biologically compatible material layer over the base. The biologically compatible material layer is Raman silent, provides a predetermined capture efficiency corresponding to a desired application, and supports biological culturing. In certain implementations, the base comprises a glass layer and an aluminum layer between the glass layer and the biologically compatible material layer.

Sample preparation for spectroscopy analysis

Detecting threat materials used in explosives is performed by receiving a sample, and selecting an area of interest on the sample suspected of containing a threat material indicative of an explosive. Detection also includes interrogating the area of interest with a Raman laser producing a Raman spectrum, and comparing an amplitude of a first spectral region in the Raman spectrum to a first predetermined threshold. Detection further includes performing a verification, if the determination indicates that the area of interest includes the threat material, by checking the interrogated area of interest for a secondary indicator of the presence of the threat material, by comparing an amplitude of a second spectral region in the Raman spectrum, which is different from the first spectral region in the Raman spectrum, to a second predetermined threshold, and activating an indicator if the verification indicates that the area of interest contains the threat material.

Explosives detection using optical spectroscopy

A small area electrostatic aerosol collector combines electrostatic collection of aerosol particles and electrohydrodynamic spraying of fluid so that a sample collected electrostatically can have fluid applied thereto. The fluid may assist with disaggregation and/or desalinization of biological material collected onto a sample substrate. A controller associated with the collector may control an electrostatic charge device and a spraying device such that the charge device and spraying device may operate in alternating fashion, or the charge device and spraying device may operate simultaneously. Further, mechanical systems are provided, for the disaggregation of particulate clusters collected onto a sample substrate.

Electrohydrodynamic spraying

A method for determining whether a sample includes a nitrate-based explosive comprises receiving the sample and selecting an area of interest on the sample. Then, at least a portion of the area of interest is interrogated with an optical source to produce a spectrum with an amplitude. The amplitude of a first portion of the spectrum is compared to a first predetermined threshold to determine if the sample includes a nitrate. After determining that the sample includes a nitrate in the area of interest, the amplitude of a second portion of the spectrum is compared to a second predetermined threshold to determine if the sample includes a secondary indicator. Then, an indicator is activated based on the determinations.
