A multiple-fill dishwasher and method includes a wash chamber having a sump at the bottom thereof, a remotely controlled inlet valve for supplying cleansing liquid into the sump, a drain for draining liquid and entrained soil from the sump, and a recirculating pump having a spraying system receiving the output thereof for spraying liquid onto soiled ware contained within the chamber. A control circuit controls the valve, drain means, and pump to perform a selected one of a plurality of different cleansing cycles which are automatically selected according to the extent of soil on the ware. An operator-actuated switch for commencing operating of the control circuit, and a chamber for collecting soil particles in a concentrated fashion during liquid recirculation, are also provided. The improvement comprises a sensor responsive to a predetermined particulate soil concentration in the soil collection chamber, the sensor being operable during liquid recirculation to cause the control circuit to select either a cycle designed to wash heavily soiled ware, or a cycle designed to wash lightly soiled ware.

Dishwashing apparatus

A combination drain pump/disposer is used with a vessel such as a dishwasher and includes a housing defining an impeller cavity, an inlet above the housing which communicates with the vessel, a pump outlet extending through a side wall of the cavity and communicating with the drain line, and a waste impeller positioned within the cavity. The impeller includes a disc-shaped base substantially parallel to and spaced slightly above the floor of the cavity, a plurality of soil-sizing orifices, an upstanding rim extending about a periphery of the base and including an inner wall defining a plurality of radially-extending, substantially vertical cutting edges and an outer wall defining a plurality of radially-extending, substantially vertical pumping vanes, and at least one breaker tooth extending upwardly from the base and positioned inwardly of the rim. The housing includes a cover plate having an opening concentric with the impeller and at least one stationary tooth providing a vertical cutting edge extending downwardly adjacent the inner wall such that rotation of the impeller causes the cutting edges and breaker tooth to pass by the stationary tooth to perform a shearing and cutting function.

Combination drain pump and grinding apparatus

A dishwasher such as a domestic dishwashing machine has a first recirculating path for recirculating wash and rinse fluids through nozzles which spray the fluid onto food ware items in the wash chamber of the warewasher. Fluid is also circulated from the wash chamber through a soil collecting circuit which conducts fluid to a soil collector which is separate from the wash chamber and recirculating path. The soil collector removes food soil from fluid passing therethrough and holds it for discharge into the dishwasher drain system when the fluids are drained from the dishwasher.

Dishwasher soil collecting circuit

A water heating and dispensing device includes a tank which forms the main hot water container, a heating device in the tank which is thermostatically controlled in order to maintain the temperature of the water at the desired level, inlet and outlet conduits associated with the tank and a valve associated with the inlet conduit for controlling water flow into the tank and dispensing of water from the outlet conduit. A separate reservoir is connected to the inlet conduit between the valve and the tank through a venturi nozzle which permits water to flow into and out of the reservoir. The reservoir has collapsible wall portions which collapse to provide for a decrease in volume in the reservoir as water is drawn from it through the venturi nozzle during dispensing of water, and which is expandable to an expanded maximum completely filled condition after dispensing has ceased, as a result of water flowing back from the main hot water container through the venturi nozzle. The maximum filled position has a sufficient volume to reduce the water level in the tank and outlet conduit sufficiently to allow for expansion of water in the tank due to heating, without dispensing water from the outlet conduit due to expansion. The reservoir comprises a cylindrical collapsible tube concentric with the inlet conduit and provided at one end with a rigid closure member in which is formed the venturi nozzle.

Expansion chamber arrangement for water heating and dispensing device

The motor/pump assembly for a dishwasher is inserted into the dishwasher tank and then into an opening in the tank bottom until a gasketed flange on the assembly seats on the edge of the opening. Wire springs are then hooked onto the assembly beneath the tank, and toggles thereon are rotated to cam and tension the springs to apply a predetermined, substantially constant force between the tank and the motor/pump assembly.

Dishwasher motor/pump mounting means

An electrical apparatus and method for producing pulsating high torque rotational vibration movement combined with a slow superimposed unidirectional rotary motion is disclosed. The apparatus includes an alternating current motor combined in a mechanically resonatable system with electrical apparatus producing a non-alternating component of magnetic flux in the motor structure. The torque generating ability of the motor is increased approximately five-fold even though the motor is operated from the same supply voltage. The disclosed apparatus is illustrated connected to a waste disposer device.

Jam breaking method for comminuting device

A simplified mounting and sealing assembly for rapidly attaching a food waste disposer to a sink includes a sink flange which is inserted into the drain opening in the sink and has an elongated neck extending below the sink. An annular pressure plate is received on the flange neck below the sink, and is temporarily supported by bosses or protuberances on the flange while also capturing the flange in the sink opening. An annular groove is formed in the flange neck below the bosses and a snap ring which is held captive in the disposer engages this groove upon lifting the disposer over the neck. The groove and snap ring hold the disposer on the flange so it is free to be rotated for making electrical and drain connections. An annular flange seal is received in the disposer and an annular compression plate rests on the upper surface of this seal. Jack screws extend between this annular compression plate and the pressure plate to lift the annular pressure plate against the bottom of the sink, compress the annular seal and lock the disposer against movement. The jack screws are threaded into the compression plate and force it downwardly against the seal to cause the seal to engage both the neck of the flange and the disposer at the same time that the pressure plate is lifted up against the bottom of the sink. The arrangement is such that extending the jack screws to lift the pressure plate and compress the flange seal does not alter location of the disposer with respect to the sink or previously completed plumbing-electrical connections.
