A piezoelectric resonator (,) having a sacrificial mass-loading layer (,). Material is removed from the mass-loading layer (,) to raise a resonator frequency to a desired target. The sacrificial layer (,) is of a dense material, such as silver or gold, but is of such a relative thin layer that it can be used on high frequency aluminum electrodes (,) of a resonator (,) without increasing adverse spurious frequency problems. It is not necessary that the mass-loading layer (,) be conductive. In addition, the silver or gold sacrificial layer (,) can be removed by ion milling at practical and economical rates, unlike aluminum or aluminum oxide. Preferably, a diffusion barrier (,) is interposed between the electrodes (,) and the mass-loading layer (,).

Piezoelectric resonator using sacrificial layer and method of tuning same

ST-cut and AT-cut quartz seed bodies (18,40) for quartz crystal synthesis and method (100) for making the same are disclosed. An extended quartz seed body (18) having an angle of about 42.75.degree. rotated about a X axis (20) from a +Z axis (22) to a -Y axis (24) and defining a ST-cut is provided and a quartz crystal bar (32) is grown thereupon. Analogously, an extended quartz seed body (40) having an angle of about 35.25.degree. rotated about a X axis (20) from a +Z axis (22) to a -Y axis (24) and defining an AT-cut is provided and a quartz crystal bar (48) is grown thereupon. An impulse transducer that does not use eccentric, motor-driven weights is constructed of a permanent magnet movable armature that oscillates within a housing and impacts resilient bumpers to produce vibrations. The armature is accelerated by a varying magnetic field energized by an alternating current. The dimensions of the enclosed housing and the mass of the movable armature as well as the strength of the magnetic fields can be optimized for the impulse magnitude that is desired.

Impulse transducer enunciator

A method and apparatus is disclosed to allow the frequency adjustment of a crystal resonator sealed in a housing. The housing includes a transparent area which has plating material deposited thereon. The plating material is vaporized by a laser beam which sprays onto the crystal resonator thereby adjusting the operating frequency. The laser beam is scanned over the transparent area until an effective amount of plating material has been vaporized to adjust the frequency of the crystal resonator.
