A water conditioner rotary valve for use in a water conditioning system includes a valve body constructed of an upper section, a lower section and a middle section, to facilitate ease in assembly of the body. The valve rotor member of the conditioner valve is driven by a Geneva drive system, to provide accurate positioning of the rotor member in its various positions. A valve seat member is located adjacent the rotor member, and provides a construction which improves the seal between the rotor member and the surface of the valve body adjacent thereto. The three-piece assembly of the valve body facilitates providing a valve capable of either upflow or downflow brining by replacing the lower valve section. A brine injector valve is mounted exteriorly of the valve body.

A microfiche reader providing varying optical paths of projection of a microfiche image. The light source for the reader may be removed and readily replaced without the operator's touching the sensitive lamp. Dual image forming, floating lenses having a universal focusing system provide multiple magnification capabilities with uniform focusing in all positions of the microfiche. The focusing system is self-compensating for mechanical tolerances. Additional means prevent chipping of the glass plates holding the microfiche when the floating lenses are removed from contact with the glass plates.

Optical structure for microfiche reader

A microfiche reader has a carrier which includes means for transporting a microfiche film with a rectilinear movement. The carrier has two plates of glass for receiving a microfiche between them, one of the glass plates being hinged to raise and lower relative to the other. As the carrier moves to one extremity of its rectilinear movement, the cover glass automatically swings on its hinge pin to open and thereby enable manual access to the microfiche between the glass. Regardless of how far the carrier does or does not move, near the extremity of the movement, this glass opening device has an ability to lift the cover glass to a position where its center of gravity closely approaches, but does not cross, the hinge pin.

A microfilm reader has a film transport mechanism driven by separate forward and reverse motors. During operation, the driven one of the motors receives full AC power for driving it at high speed. During low speed operation, the driven motor receives partial power during half-cycles of one polarity, but only minimal power during half-cycles of opposite polarity. The undriven motor is pulled by its associated reel as the film is unwound therefrom. A large capacitor, which is part of a series circuit including both the forward and reverse motors, charges while either motor runs. When a driven motor is stopped, the capacitor is discharged into both of the motors to provide a unipolar field which produces a braking torque. Thus, the capacitor discharge not only stops the driven motor quickly and efficiently, but also stops the undriven motor to maintain film tension.

A library file of microfiche film comprises a plurality of spaced parallel film stored inside a cartridge. In a microfiche reader, a reciprocally moving extractor moves into and out of the cartridge to extract and return microfiche. An elevator control means selectively raises or lowers the cartridge relatively to the extractor, thereby selecting a particular microfiche. An interlock mechanism actuated by the extractor and selectively connected to the elevator control means prevents the elevator from moving after a microfiche is extracted and before it is returned to the cartridge.
