A scintillator detector apparatus includes a sandwich of fibers disposed in a spaced apart pattern for detecting one form of radiation while enabling another form of radiation to pass through open portions between the fibers along with a thin film attached to or proximate to the fibers for detecting the another form of radiation. The thin film is disposed on a plastic substrate which includes a reflecting layer for directed scintillation from the film into the fibers. The fibers scintillate upon interception of, for example, beta particles, which is transmitted to photomultiplier apparatus by the fibers. The fibers are also sensitive to ultraviolet scintillation from the film and it responds thereto to generate scintillation which is also transmitted to the photomultiplier tube. Combinations of the sandwiches may be utilized to formulate time of flight scintillation detectors and the sandwich can be responsive to various types of radiation dependent upon selected fibers and thin films.

Scintillator apparatus

A compact laser diode monitor for measuring concentrations of individual atomic and molecular species in both gaseous and semitransparent fluids, includes a first diode laser having an output for resonantly exciting a first selected electronic transition of a specific atomic or molecular species of a sample, and a second diode laser having an output for resonantly exciting a second selected electronic transition of said specific atomic or molecular species of said sample. A difference between said first and second frequency outputs is equal to a vibrational energy level difference of the specific atomic or molecular species. Further said first and second frequency outputs are simultaneously directed into said sample, with selected momentum vectors in order to cause the selected atomic or molecular species to emit a coherent photon signal in a selected direction having a frequency equal to twice the first frequency output minus the second frequency output. A detector is provided for receiving the emitted coherent photon signal and spectrally analyzing the emitted coherent photon signal.

Optical apparatus for measuring angles to a precision approaching the theoretical optical limit for a fixed aperture. Calculations and measurement of the angle are made on the basis of the displacement of a very detailed waveform on a multi-pixel detector from a known point on the detector. The angle this displacement represents is created by the angular displacement of a dispersive element attached to the object of interest. The beamline comprises an optical source, the dispersive element on the object, and a spectrometer which contains an echelle and the detector. The known point on the detector is established by aligning the beamline to a fiducial angle.

Precision angle sensor

Velocity vector components of a relativistic high energy beam of atomic particles are measured by examination of the Doppler shifts of spontaneous photo emissions from the beam. Beam direction can be calculated directly from measurements made at the Doppler-free angle if beam velocity is known. Beam velocity can be calculated from measurements made at the Doppler free angle or at other convenient angles. A beam steering technique by nulling outputs from diametrically opposed sensors is also disclosed.
