The invention provides a method of treating a patient infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) comprising raising the core temperature of the patient and then returning the core temperature of the patient to normal at least one time, wherein the core temperature is raised to a temperature range and a duration sufficient to reduce or eliminate the patient's viral load of HCV.

The invention is a dual lumen, adjustable cannula assembly which comprises an inner cannula which is moveable within an outer cannula. Each cannula has openings for fluid passage. The assembly may be placed at any region within a body cavity such as the peritoneal cavity, the vena cava, veins or arteries. The regulation of blood during the hyperthermic treatment of the patient's blood stabilizes the biochemical reactions fundamental to the metabolic welfare of the organisms within the patient's blood while the viruses within the patient's blood are eliminated.
