Anhydride functionalized copolymers of a higher .alpha.-olefin, and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid ester formed by copolymerization of olefin, acid ester and anhydride of the acid can be used to form imide and polar group-containing lubricant additives by reaction of the anhydride functionality in such a copolymer with an organic compound containing amino functionality and a polar group, such as hydroxy or carboxylic acid.

Functionalized copolymer of higher .alpha.-olefin and unsaturated

Epoxy functional copolymers of a higher .alpha.-olefin, and an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid ester formed by copolymerization of olefin, acid ester and ethylenically unsaturated glycidyl compound can be used to form nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and/or sulfur-containing lubricant additives by reaction of the epoxy functionality in such a copolymer with glycidyl-reactive compounds containing nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and/or sulfur atoms. Alternatively, the copolymerization reaction can utilize the olefin, unsaturated acid ester, and an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing the nitrogen, phosphorus and/or sulfur atom, which compound is formed by reaction of ethylenically unsaturated glycidyl compound and an epoxy-reactive nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or sulfur-containing compound.

A composition and method for inhibiting damage in a functional fluid by incorporating therein a damage inhibiting amount of an ammonium salt of a phosphorus acid in accordance with the formula: ##STR1## wherein R, R', R', R''' can be the same or different and wherein R and R' can be conjoint and contain oxygen, nitrogen, and mixtures thereof; and represent alkyl, aralkyl, and alkenyl groups containing from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms, X represents oxygen or sulfur, Y' and Y'' represent lower alkoxy, lower thioalkoxy, alkenyloxy, thioalkenyloxy, lower alkyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, phenyl lower alkyl, thiophenoxy, aryloxy, alkaryloxy, aralkoxy and lower alkylthiophenoxy, Z represents oxygen or sulfur, and m equals 1 or 2.

Functional fluids containing ammonium salts of phosphorus acids

An aircraft hydraulic fluid comprising (1) a base stock material, and (2) a low molecular weight polyester additive consisting of C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 dicarboxylic acid and a C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 diol. By incorporating about 1 to about 20 percent by weight of said additive in said hydraulic fluid, an essentially shear stable hydraulic fluid results.

Hydraulic fluid system

A hydraulic fluid comprising (1) a base stock material, and (2) a cycloalkyl epoxide and a phenyl naphthylamine in a ratio of from about 1:10 to about 10:1 by weight. By incorporating about 0.1 to about 10 percent by weight of the hydraulic fluid of said epoxide and amine in said hydraulic fluid, acid buildup therein is controlled.
