A cooling system for a fan drive device, particularly for a wet friction clutch. The clutch shaft member is attached to a shaft mounting plate and ATF is circulated through them. The shaft mounting plate is connected in turn to an engine mounting plate which has engine coolant circulated through it at a lower temperature. The shaft mounting plate and engine mounting plates both have passageways for circulation of fluids therein.

Cooling system for clutch

A fan drive system is provided that is hydraulically controlled having an electrical failure mode wherein midrange operation of the fan drive system is maintained. Accordingly, in the failure mode, a fan drive system hydraulic relief valve is not closed thereby ensuring a degree of operation of the fan drive system even during periods of electrical failure.

A failsafe system for a heavy-duty multi-speed clutch includes a thermal valve coupled within a clutch pressure tube orifice circuit protecting a clutch pack from heat degradation. When oil temperature of the clutch reaches a level where thermal degradation can occur, the thermal valve allows flow into a clutch piston system at a maximum operating pressure, thereby engaging a clutch drive and cooling the clutch to a safe condition.

Fan drive having pressure control (fluid) of a wet friction fan drive

A hydraulically controlled fan drive system for controlling the cooling of an engine and having a method of engagement includes a housing assembly containing a hydraulic fluid and an engaging circuit. The engaging circuit includes a pitot tube coupled within the housing assembly that receives at least a portion of the hydraulic fluid as the housing assembly rotates to drive a clutch pack (and coupled fan) via static pressure. A fluid controller having binary control adjusts the static pressure within the pitot tube at a given rotational speed, thereby controlling the engagement of the clutch pack to a fully engaged drive (utilizing friction type engagement), a fully disengaged drive, and at least two partially engaged clutch positions (i.e. partially engaged utilizing a wet viscous type clutch engagement). To control static pressure release, the fluid controller may utilize a dual spool system valving arrangement or a parallel fixed orifice binary control.

Hydraulic fan drive system employing binary control strategy

A manual shift transmission having multiple input and output portions is provided with a control having input and output shift rails. A laterally movable control shaft extends axially through cutouts in respective shift rails and carries cams adapted to cooperate with cam follower surfaces on corresponding cutouts to effect rectilinear movement of the shift rails upon rotation of the control shaft. The cams are arranged on the shaft so that the shaft may be positioned to place respective cams in register with the input and output shift rails while all other cams are out of register with the rail cutouts. The shift movement of respective output and input shift rails is overlapped during the rotation of the control shaft to decrease the throw of the shift lever.

The control shaft is spring biased to provide variable resistance in response to movement of a control lever to enable the operator to determine his position in the shift pattern of the transmission.

A manually operable shift control mechanism operatively connected with a transmission through an electro-hydraulic control circuit for selectively establishing one of a plurality of speed ratios in the transmission, the control mechanism including a pivoted lever angularly movable between successively arranged positions for establishing one of the speed ratios in the transmission, and a detent device coacting with detent cut-outs on a control plate for releasably maintaining the lever in each of the transmission settings and affording a distinct 'feel' to the operator for each transmission setting, as well as an electric circuit board on the control plate operatively interconnected with the transmission control circuit, with the circuit board being provided with a plurality of spaced electric proximity switches that are activated by a magnet means carried by a pivot arm member movable with the lever.
