A halogenated hydantoin product and method of producing same for use as e.g. a bleaching agent or disinfectant comprising a halogenated hydantoin of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is methyl or ethyl and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 which may be the same or different are chlorine or bromine, either as the sole constituent or in admixture with halogenated dimethylhydantoins. The products are substantially dust-free, free-flowing and upon compaction form a solid product of high physical integrity.

Method for preparing halogenated hydantoins

A halogenated hydantoin product and method of producing same for use as e.g. a bleaching agent or disinfectant comprising a halogenated hydantoin of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is methyl or ethyl and X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 which may be the same or different is chlorine or bromine, either as the sole constituent or in admixture with halogenated dimethylhydantoins. The products are substantially dust-free, free-flowing and upon compaction form a solid product of high physical integrity.

Shaped halogenated hydantoins

The generation of total and free halogen in aqueous solutions of halogenated hydantoins is potentiated by the use of a solubility agent selected from the group consisting of magnesium oxide, barium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, 5,5-dialkyl substituted hydantoin and mixtures thereof. The use of these solubility agents in combination with halogenated hydantoins, such as bromochloromethylethylhydantoin, is especially suitable for use as a toilet bowl cleaner.

Method of enhancing solubility of halogenated hydantoins

Readily dispersible wax compositions, which may be dispersed in either hot or cold water, are formed from finely divided mixtures of a bis-amide and a dispersing agent in an amount effective for dispersion. The dispersing agent is an acid neutralized salt of a N-[2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethyl] saturated fatty acid amide or N-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethyl] saturated fatty acid amide.

Spherical agglomerates of dihalodimethylhydantoins and dimethylhydantoins are prepared by feeding a mixture of the hydantoins together to the surface of an agglomerating disc in conjunction with a spray of water, and subsequently drying the agglomerates. These agglomerates possess a hard structural integrity and exhibit a uniform and controlled dissolution when placed in an aqueous environment, thereby rendering them suitable for a variety of applications including automatic dishwashing detergents, industrial bleaches, as well as disinfectants for cooling towers, swimming pools and spa waters.

An improved bleaching agent composition is described composed of a mixture of N,N-dichloro-substituted hydantoin compounds with sodium bromide, which has enhanced bleaching effectiveness for textile materials, particularly in laundry systems, when used at lower-than-normal washing temperatures, e.g., in the range of about 100.degree. to 140.degree. F.
