A method of preparing a light-absorbing layer applied to a lamp vessel of an electric lamp. At least a part of the lamp vessel is provided with a light-absorbing coating which has stabilized pigments incorporated in a sol-gel matrix. In order to stabilize the pigments, an aminosilane is added.

Method of preparing a light-absorbing coating

An electric lamp includes a light-transmitting lamp vessel which accommodates a light source. At least a part of the lamp vessel is provided with a light-absorbing coating which has stabilized pigments that are incorporated in a sol-gel matrix. Aminosilane is included in order to stabilize the pigments.

The electric lamp comprises a lamp vessel ( ) which is transparent to visible light and which accommodates a light source. At least a part of the lamp vessel ( ) is covered with a light-absorbing coating ( ). According to the invention, the light-absorbing coating ( ) comprises a network which can be obtained by conversion of an organically modified silane by a sol-gel process. The organically modified silane is selected from the group formed by compounds of structural formula R&prime;Si(OR&Prime;) , wherein R&prime; is an alkyl or aryl group and R&Prime; is an alkyl group. Preferably, R&prime; is CH or C H and R&Prime; is CH or C H . Nano-sized silica particles having a diameter d&lE;50 nm may be incorporated in the network. The pigment is preferably chosen from the group formed by Fe O , P-doped Fe O , ZnFe O , ZnO.Fe O , CoAl O , Nd O , BiVO and zirconium praseodymium silicate or mixtures thereof. The light-absorbing coating ( ) of the electric lamp according to the invention is optically transparent, substantially free of scattering and stable at temperatures up to 350&deg; C.
