Gases which are rich in carbon monoxide are producted by a catalytic cracking of gaseous or vaporized hydrocarbons. A part of the hydrocarbons is combusted with an oxygen-containing gas which is added at a rate that is twice to ten times the stoichiometric oxygen demand. The combustion temperature are between 800.degree. and 1500.degree. C. The oxygen-containing combustion gas is admixed to the preheated remainder of the hydrocarbon and a mixture is producted which is at a temperature between about 700.degree. and about 1300.degree. C. That mixture is passed through a fixed bed consisting of a granular cracking catalyst. A high-CO product gas at a temperature between about 800.degree. and about 1150.degree. C. is withdrawn from the fixed bed.

An improved continuous process of producing fatty alcohols by a catalytic hydrogenation of fatty acids wherein hydrogen is fed and distributed into the annular space through nozzles which are specially designed to effect a pressure loss of 15 to 30 bars is disclosed. Guide tubes having specific dimensions are disposed above said nozzles. The feedstock to be treated and the catalyst dispersion are fed separately. The new process results in milder conditions for the catalyst and in a higher throughput rate.

Continuous process of producing fatty alcohols

A process for removing sulfur oxides from exhaust gas formed by combustion particularly exhaust gas from an electricity-generating power plant. The exhaust gas flows through a reaction zone which operates like a spray dryer. A purifying liquor consisting of an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and/or sodium bicarbonate is sprayed into the reaction zone, in which the heat content of the exhaust gases causes virtually all of the water content of the purifying liquor to be evaporated. The exhaust gas is subsequently passed through a filter. Anhydrous solids are withdrawn from the reaction zone and the filter and contain at least 75% of sodium sulfite, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride and are processed to form sodium carbonate. To that end the solids are dissolved and sulfite is oxidized to form sulfate so that a solution that contains sodium sulfate and sodium chloride is formed. The sulfate is separated from that solution and the remaining solution is used in the recovery of sodium carbonate by the Solvay process.
