A high definition television receiver including analog and digital signal processing circuits receives an analog high definition television signal representative of digital television information. The received signal contains narrowband high priority information and low priority wideband information. An automatic gain control (AGC) signal is developed from the received analog signal by means of a root-mean-square amplitude detector.

The present invention is directed to an improved solution to the problem of interference in the picture displayed by a standard NTSC receiver that results from a received television signal that includes a quadrature-amplitude modulated additional-information constituent passing through the Nyquist filter of the standard receiver (this additional-informaton constituent being intended for use only by wide-screen and/or extended-definition television receivers). This solution, in accordance with each of several different embodiments, employs means at the transmitter that includes frequency-dependent attenuation means operating at baseband frequencies to modify the relative amplitudes of each frequency component of the lower and upper sidebands of the transmitted television signal that defines the additional-information constituent in a manner to compensate for the attenuation characteristics of the Nyquist filter of a standard NTSC receiver.

Interference reduction for extra-spectrum, compatible television system

Apparatus for augmenting a television signal with auxiliary signal includes circuitry for modulating a picture carrier with baseband video signal to generate a vestigial sideband television signal. Auxiliary signal is modulated on a further carrier of such frequency that the upper sidebands of the modulated further carrier, representing the auxiliary information, (1) occupy the frequency spectrum of the vestigial sideband of the vestigial sideband television signal and (2) occur clustered at odd multiples of half line frequency. The sidebands of the modulated further carrier are added to the vestigial sideband television signal in frequency interleaved fashion in the vestigial sideband spectral region.

A color beam splitter splits the incoming light into complementary colors such as yellow, magenta, and cyan for improved colorimetry. Stripes are used so that no light is absorbed and therefore a high S/N ratio is achieved. The stripes can be on mirrors or prisms.

A TV camera comprises a pair of CCD imagers subject to defects. Defect detection is done by comparing signals from the imagers, thus saving the expense of a defect location memory and also detecting more kinds of defects than one would detect by just comparing one signal to a fixed reference. As a result, CCD imagers with defects can be used thus increasing production yield of such imagers.

In a video disc playback system non-linear intermodulation distortions are effected during playback by the pick-up stylus. These distortions cause disturbing visual beats in the reproduced images. A first signal path at the output of the pick-up circuitry transfers the main video signal with negligible phase shift over a given band of frequencies. A second signal path which parallels the first path effects a modulation of the video signals by the interferring signals (i.e., sound signals). The signals from the first and second paths are combined to effect a substantial removal of the interfering intermodulation products.
