A portable heating appliance having a member to be heated, includes first and second burners for heating the member; a portable fuel cartridge for supplying fuel to the burners, the furel cartridge including a fuel delivery valve for controlling the flow of fuel from the fuel cartridge, the fuel delivery valve including a control device for preventing the flow of fuel when in a first position and for permitting the flow of fuel when in a second, different position, and a first spring for biasing the control device to the first position; a plunger for actuating the fuel delivery valve in response to user actuation to start the flow of fuel from the fuel cartridge, the plunger pushing in the control device from the first position to the second position against the force of the spring to open the fuel delivery valve so that the latter permits the flow of fuel to the burners; the fuel cartridge further including a ring rotatably mounted on the housing of the cartridge and connected with the fuel delivery valve for moving the fuel delivery valve of the fuel cartridge between an active position to enable actuation of the control device thereof by the plunger and an inactive position at which the control device is not actuated by the plunger; and a regulator for maintaining a substantially temperature of the burners.

A hairstyling device, preferably a hair crimper, is provided with a stationary jaw member having an aluminum plate which heats up either by a self-contained fuel burner or by electrical power and, in cooperation with a movable jaw member, styles hair to conform to a predetermined desired shape. The outside surfaces of the movable and stationary jaw members are provided with a set of spaced upwardly extending ribs, which serve both to allow finger contacting and manipulation of the jaw members of the device and, in addition, allow for efficient heat radiation so that the outside surface of the jaw members does not get uncomfortably hot.

A portable hair roller heating device includes a housing defined by top, side and bottom walls, the top wall including apertures through which elongated hair rollers can be inserted into the housing; a heating chamber in the housing for heating the hair rollers inserted through the apertures; two burner tubes with free ends extending into the heating chamber; a fuel delivery system for supplying fuel to the heating chamber through the burner tubes; an ignition device for igniting the fuel supplied to the heating chamber by the burner tubes so as to heat the chamber; a plurality of heat conducting tubes positioned adjacent the heating chamber and in line with the plurality of apertures for supporting the hair rollers in the housing and for conducting heat to the hair rollers from the heating chamber; a first screw-threaded well in the top wall for removably connecting a fuel supply cartridge thereto in an inoperative state when the heating appliance is not being used; a second screw-threaded well in the bottom wall for removably connecting the fuel supply cartridge thereto to supply fuel to the fuel delivery system when the heating appliance is in use; and a removable cover selectively connectable to either the top wall to cover portions of the hair rollers extending through the top wall and the cartridge in the first well, or the bottom wall of the housing so as to support the housing and the cartridge in the second well.

A portable curling iron having a barrel to be heated, includes first and second burners which heat the barrel; a fuel supply cartridge which supplies fuel to the first and second burners, the cartridge including a fuel delivery valve which controls the flow of fuel from the cartridge; a plunger which applies a force to the valve in response to user actuation, to start the flow of fuel from the cartridge; a regulator assembly including a diaphragm which applies a reverse force to the plunger when the gas pressure exceeds a predetermined pressure, to maintain a substantially constant flow rate of fuel to the first and second burners; a valve stem through which the fuel travels from the cartridge to the second burner; a bimetallic element for applying a force to the valve stem to permit the fuel to pass to the second burner when the temperature is less than a predetermined start-up temperature and for removing such force when the predetermined start-up temperature is attained; and a spring which applies a reverse force to the valve stem to prevent the fuel to pass to the second burner when the predetermined start-up temperature is attained, so as to achieve fast heat up of the barrel without fuel waste.

A portable hair roller heating device for heating flexible hair rollers, includes an enclosed heating chamber defined by a top wall, side wall and bottom wall, the top wall having a plurality of apertures through which the hair rollers to be heated can be inserted; a cover hingedly connected on the top wall so as to cover portions of the hair rollers extending through the top wall; first and second burners positioned adjacent the heating chamber, the first burner having a first burner tube with a free end and the second burner having a second burner tube with a free end; a single junction tube joining together the free ends of the first and second burner tubes, the junction tube having a free end extending into the chamber for heating the same; a fuel supply cartridge which supplies fuel to the burners and which controls the flow of fuel from the cartridge, the cartridge including a fuel supply valve; an ignitor assembly for igniting the fuel escaping from the free end of said junction tube; and a plunger which applies a force to the valve in response to user actuation, to start fuel flow.

A portable solder iron includes a hollow barrel having a free tapered end; first and second burners positioned in a free tapered end; a burner having separate, independently controlled gas supply paths positioned in the barrel, the supply paths including first and second tubes, each tube having a free end; a single junction tube joining together the free ends of the first and second tubes, the junction tube having a free end adajcent the tapered free end of the barrel for heating the same; a fuel supply cartridge which supplies fuel to the first and second tubes and which controls the flow of fuel from the cartridge; an ignitor assembly for igniting the fuel escaping from the free end of said junction tube; a plunger which applies a force to the valve in response to user actuation, to start fuel flow; a regulator including a diaphragm which maintains a substantially constant flow rate of fuel to the first and second tubes; a valve stem through which the fuel travels from the cartridge to the second tubes; a bimetallic element for applying a force to the valve stem to permit fuel flow to the second tube when the temperature is less than a predetermined start-up temperature and for removing such force otherwise; and a spring which applies a reverse force to the valve stem to prevent fuel flow to the second tubes when the predetermined start-up temperature is attained, so as to achieve fast heat up of the barrel.

A portable heating appliance having a member to be heated, includes burner tubes for heating the member; a fuel supply cartridge for supplying fuel to the burner tubes, the cartridge including a stationary fuel delivery valve for controlling the flow of fuel from the cartridge; and an actuator assembly for actuating the fuel delivery valve in response to user actuation to start the flow of fuel from the cartridge, the actuator assembly including a plunger, a mechanism for moving the plunger to a first position into operative engagement with the fuel delivery valve for opening the fuel delivery valve and a mechanism for moving the plunger to a second position out of operative engagement with the fuel delivery valve so that the latter terminates the flow of fuel to the burner tubes. The mechanism for moving the plunger to a second position incudes a pivotally mounted lever; a spring for biasing the lever in a first direction; a switch for biasing the lever in a second, opposite direction against the force of the spring; a ring secured to the plunger; and a slidably mounted shaft movable by the lever into engagement with the ring to move the plunger to the second position when the switch biases the lever in the second direction.
