As a sintered body for a radiation shielding material, which can effectively shield mainly low-energy-level neutrons, that is, thermal neutrons and lower, slow neutrons, and has excellent physical properties such as bending strength and Vickers hardness, leading to high machining strength, a sintered body for a radiation shielding material comprising LiF ranging between 99 wt. % to 5 wt. %, and one or more fluorides selected from among MgF, CaF, AlF, KF, NaF, and/or YFranging between 1 wt. % to 95 wt. %, having physical properties of a relative density of 92% or more, a bending strength of 50 MPa or more, and a Vickers hardness of 100 or more, is provided.

A fluoride sintered body suitable for a moderator which moderates high-energy neutrons so as to generate neutrons for medical care with which an affected part of the deep part of the body is irradiated to make a tumor extinct comprises MgFof a compact polycrystalline structure having a bulk density of 2.90 g/cmor more and as regards mechanical strengths, a bending strength of 10 MPa or more and a Vickers hardness of 71 or more.

Fluoride sintered body for neutron moderator and method for producing the same

A MgFsystem fluoride sintered body for a radiation moderator having a compact polycrystalline structure excellent in radiation moderation performance, especially neutron moderation performance, contains CaFof 90% by weight at the maximum and has a relative density of 95.2% or more.

A MgF&#x2014;CaFbinary system sintered body for a radiation moderator having a compact polycrystalline structure excellent in radiation moderation performance, especially neutron moderation performance, comprises MgFcontaining CaFfrom 0.2% by weight to 90% by weight inclusive, having a bulk density of 2.96 g/cmor more, and a bending strength of 15 MPa or more and a Vickers hardness of 90 or more as regards mechanical strengths.
