The present invention relates to a water-soluble photosensitive compound represented by the general formula (1):or by the general formula (2):in the formula, X represents a direct bond, an alkylene group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, &#x2014;CHO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CHOCH&#x2014;, &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014; or &#x2014;SO&#x2014;, and Z represents &#x2014;SO.Q, &#x2014;COO.Qor &#x2014;SONR, in which Qrepresents Li, Na, Kor NRand R represents a hydrogen atom and/or an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, said alkyl group optionally having one hydroxy, ether, carbonyl, carbonyloxy or oxycarbonyl group,wherein a photosensitive group has an absorption maximum wavelength of not longer than 305 nm in the ultraviolet absorption spectrum thereof.

This invention is directed to reduce the viscosity of a naphthalene type mixed liquid crystal and to improve display quality while maintaining a bookshelf layer structure. The ferroelectric liquid crystal composition of the present invention comprises 70 to 97 parts by weight of a naphthalene base mixed liquid crystal and 3 to 30 parts by weight of a predetermined tolan type liquid crystal.
