The distance between a moving character and a fixed character which are displayed in a pseudo-three-dimensional space on a display monitor screen is calculated by identifying one of polygons which make up the fixed character and which contains a point of planar coordinates representing the position of the moving character, and calculating the distance between the moving character and the polygon which has been identified. A polygon representing a mark associated with the moving character is applied to a plane of a polygon of the fixed character by determining a normal vector which is normal to the plane of the polygon at a predetermined position thereon, determining a first vector contained in the plane of the polygon perpendicularly to the normal vector, determining a second vector contained in the plane of the polygon perpendicularly to both the normal vector and the first vector, and determining the rotation matrix from the normal matrix, the first matrix, and the second matrix.

Video simulation system for calculating distance between characters and applying polygon to polygon plane

A simulation game machine relatively moves a virtual character displayed on a monitor in a game space in accordance with control by a player using an operation unit. An image display processor displays a real-time three-dimensional image including a player's automobile, a plurality of general automobiles, and a course established in a game space on a display monitor. A driving control assembly is operated by a player to instruct the player's automobile to run on the course. A player's automobile control unit controls the player's automobile to run on the course in response to instructions from the driving control assembly. A rank decision unit ranks the player's automobile using a parameter relative to a skill of the player while the player's automobile is running on the course. The rank decision unit detects whether the player's automobile passes or is passed by one of the general automobiles, and varies the value of the parameter based on the detection of the player's automobile passing or being passed by one of the general automobiles.

A multidirectional switch is provided with a lever, a lever support assembly for supporting the lever in such a way that it can be slanted in directions of first and second axes intersecting each other, an automatic lever reset mechanism for causing the lever to automatically return from its slant position to neutral position, a retainer for retaining the lever in a position slanted in the second axis direction against restoration force exerted by the automatic lever reset mechanism, and a sensor of which sensing elements are arranged at positions corresponding to individual slant positions of the lever. The multidirectional switch provides different types of information depending on directions in which the lever is slanted.
