In conventional methods of correction luminance in displays, it has been necessary to interrupt video display during use in order to carry out correction. This is a problem in that interruptions are not good for workability from the perspective of the user of the image display device. In consideration of this, the present invention realizes a display without non-uniformity in illumination with respect to both initial characteristics and change over time by measuring anode current of an FED and creating a luminance correction memory. In addition, by illuminating arbitrary pixels during video idle periods, capturing the luminance information from the pixels, and renewing a correction memory based on this luminance information, correction for change over time is possible without interrupting video display. Thus, a display device that can maintain high quality images is provided.

An object of the present invention is to provide electron emission devices having improved electron convergence. To this end, an electron emission device of the present invention is such that a cathode electrode, an insulating layer, and a gate electrode are layered on a substrate in an order; an electron emission layer is in a first hole on the substrate penetrating from the gate electrode through the cathode electrode; an upper surface of the electron emission layer is between an upper surface of the substrate and a boundary between the cathode electrode and the insulating layer; at least one of a side surface and a lower surface except for a central area of the electron emission layer contacts the cathode electrode. By such an electron emission device, electrons are emitted mainly from the peripheral area of the electron emission layer. Accordingly, the electron convergence is improved.

The first basic structure of the electron emission element of the present invention includes at least two electrodes disposed in a horizontal direction at a predetermined interval, and a plurality of electron emission portions made of a particle or an aggregate of the particles dispersively disposed between the electrodes. On the other hand, the second basic structure of the electron emission element of the present invention includes at least two electrodes disposed at a predetermined interval, a conductive layer disposed between the electrodes so as to be electrically connected thereto, and a plurality of electron emission portions made of a particle or an aggregate of the particles dispersively disposed on the surface of the conductive layer between the electrodes. According to these structures, an electron emission element with high stability can be obtained, in which emissions can be emitted efficiently and uniformly even in the absence of a bias voltage (electric field) from outside in an output (emission) direction of the electrons, by utilizing a transverse electric field generated between the electrodes disposed in a horizontal direction at a predetermined interval or an in-plane electric current flowing through the conductive layer disposed between the electrodes.

A flat display panel assembly includes an evacuated glass envelope having a faceplate, a source of electron beams, a control electrode assembly including a stack of electrode substrates each having a predetermined pattern of electrode holes defined therein, and anodes formed by depositing phosphor material on the faceplate in correspondence with the electrode holes in the electrode substrates. At least one of the electrode substrates is made of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion different from that of the remaining electrode substrates. The electrodes holes in such one of the electrode substrates are so defined and so arranged as to be offset from the corresponding electrode holes in the other electrode substrates by an increasing as a distance increases from a center portion of the electrode assembly towards the perimeter of the electrode assembly. With the electrode holes so defined and so arranged, the electrode substrates are movably supported to accomodate the thermal expansion.
