A display unitequipped with a panelin which pixels are arranged in a matrix, includes: a mode setting sectionfor setting the display unitto one of a plurality of display modes; a voltage supply sectionfor changing a drive voltage which serves as a reference voltage for voltage supplied to the panel, according to the display mode set by the mode setting section; a gate driverfor supplying a selection signal to a plurality of the pixels arranged in a row direction in the panel; and a source driverfor supplying each of the plurality of pixels selected based on the selection signal with a pixel drive voltage generated according to luminance data which specifies luminance of the given pixel and to the drive voltage.

An afterimage occurring on a liquid crystal display is eliminated at the time of turning off the system power with an inexpensive circuit construction, without the need for reserving a special power supply. The afterimage continues to be displayed for a certain period of time after the turning-off of the power supply, and is eliminated by the load capacitance processed by liquid crystal display elements in a liquid crystal display panel.
