An image forming apparatus includes: a cover member that covers part of a main body frame; a first turn support member having: one end turnably supported by a first shaft provided at the main body frame, the first shaft extending horizontally; and another end turnably supported by a second shaft provided at the cover member, the second shaft extending horizontally; and a second turn support member having: one end turnably supported by a third shaft provided below the first shaft of the main body frame, the third shaft extending horizontally; and another end turnably supported by a fourth shaft provided at the cover member, the fourth shaft extending horizontally, wherein in a closed state where the cover member covers the main body frame, the fourth shaft is located below the third shaft, and in a fully open state, the fourth shaft is located above the third shaft.

Image forming apparatus

An image forming apparatus indicates on a display a message prompting placement of paper, which is to be placed in a cassette, on a reading device and issuance of an instruction to start reading, in order to set a size of paper placed in the cassette. When touch of a button is detected after the message is indicated and a user operation giving an instruction to start reading is accepted, the image forming apparatus detects the size of placed paper using the reading device. The image forming apparatus then sets the size of paper placed in the cassette to the detected size.

Technique for setting paper size for image forming apparatus

The recording sheet supporting surface of the transport belt comes in contact with the photosensitive drums for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black in the color copy mode, and is separated from the photosensitive drums aside from the photosensitive drum used for forming a black image in the monochrome copy mode with the image forming units for cyan, magenta, and yellow not being activated. With this separating operation, the distance on the transportation path of the recording sheet measured from the synchronizing roller to the transfer position of the photosensitive drum used for forming a black image in the monochrome copy mode is longer than in the color copy mode. Thus, the start time of scanning the surface of the photosensitive drum used for forming the black image is delayed in the monochrome mode according to the difference in distances between the color and monochrome modes.

Tandem-type image forming apparatus operating in color mode and monochrome mode

A belt drive used in image forming apparatuses which minimizes the transverse movement of the belt across the length of a roller and prevents the riding up of the belt onto the roller. The belt drive device has a belt equipped with elastic guide members mounted on each edge or on the back surface of the belt near each edge. The belt is suspended over two or more rollers and driven by the drive belt. At least one of the rollers is a drive roller having a rotating member mounted between the elastic guide member and the roller end area such that the rotating members rotate independently of the roller.

Belt drive device and image forming apparatus equipped with said device

An image forming apparatus is provided with a plurality of image forming units along a transportation path of a recording sheet transported by a revolving transport belt, each image forming unit including an image holding component. The image forming apparatus is further provided with a transport belt moving unit for moving the transport belt between a first state and a second state by changing a form of a revolution of the transport belt, the first state being where the transport belt does not touch at least one of the image holding components and the second state being where the transport belt touches the image holding components not touched in the first state.
