Detergent compositions each of which comprises (A) at least one phosphate ester or a salt thereof represented by the following formula (1): wherein Rrepresents a C-Chydrocarbon group, m stands for a number of from 0 to 10 on weight average, X represents H, an alkali metal atom, ammonium, a basic amino acid residual group, or an alkanolamino group having a hydroxy(C-Calkyl) group, and Rrepresents &#x2014;(CHCHO)&#x2014;Ror X, or a mixture thereof, and (B) at least one glyceryl ether having a C-Calkyl or alkenyl group. These detergent compositions are low in skin irritation and are good in foaming performance.

A gelling agent having a high ability of gelling an oily base which is capable of giving a gel composition having a strong gel strength and a good transparency, a gel composition having a strong gel strength and a good transparency, an external composition having a good feel upon use, a cosmetic preparation having a good feel upon use, and a fragrance composition having a good transparency and a good appearance is provided. An amide compound represented by the following formula 1: is used. In formula 1, R, Rand Rare each independently a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having a carbon number of from 1 to 3 with the proviso that at least one of R, Rand Ris a hydrogen atom. R, Rand Rare each independently a saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched hydrocarbon group having a total carbon number of from 6 to 24 which optionally has at least one group selected from the group consisting of an ether group, amide group, ester group, amino group and hydroxyl group; and m, n and p are each independently an integer of from 0 to 3.

Detergent compositions containing (A) an anionic surfactant, (B) an antibacterial agent, and (C) a glyceryl ether having a C alkyl or alkenyl group. The compositions are excellent in detergency and quick foaming properties, have high antibacterial action and bring about sufficient antipruritic and deodorant effects on the scalp or body and antidandruff effects on the scalp.

A process for producing a glyceryl ether which contains a markedly small amount of organohalogen compounds and therefore can be used even for cosmetics and body detergents. The process comprises reacting an alcohol with an &agr;-epihalohydrin in the presence of an acid catalyst, subjecting the reaction mixture to ring closure to convert it into the corresponding glycidyl ether and then hydrolyzing the glycidyl ether, wherein: (a) the hydrolysis is effected at 140 to 230&deg; C. in the presence of a salt formed from a strongly basic compound and a weakly acidic compound, or (b) the reaction mixture after the hydrolysis is heated at 100 to 230&deg; C. in the presence of a salt formed from a strongly basic compound and a weakly acidic compound.

The invention relates to a detergent composition comprising (A) 0.5 to 60% by weight of a surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants and amphoteric surfactants, (B) 0.01 to 20% by weight of a conditioning component, and (C) 0.1 to 30% by weight of a monoglyceryl ether having a linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl group having 4 to 12 carbon atoms. The composition is excellent in foaming performance, gives users a pleasant feeling upon use and brings about a sufficient conditioning effect on the skin and hair.
