According to one embodiment, a genre classification unit is provided to classify a plurality of programs based on genres with reference to program information. Further, a day classification unit is provided to classify the classified programs based on broadcast days. A display form controller sorts program information description cells of the programs classified based on days into display areas based on days on a display device. When a program information description cell of a display area of a specified day is scrolled, the display form controller controls data so as to display program information description cells of display areas of days other than the specified day in a still state.

A sub-picture packet is encoded using a packet header containing a time stamp, sub-picture data containing compressed pixel data, one or more display control sequences, and a sub-picture unit header. The time stamp indicates the playback start time of the sub-picture packet. The display control sequence defines the order of display of the sub-picture data. The sub-picture unit header indicates the size of the sub-picture packet and the location of the display control sequence. The encoded sub-picture packet is decoded, and displayed based on the display control sequence.

A method and system in which a section of a previously encoded digital bit stream is replaced with another section of encoded video. In order to remove a section of encoded video, it is necessary to determine the beginning and ending points of the encoded video in the digitally encoded bit stream. The addresses of the beginning and ending points of the encoded data cannot be simply looked up but are calculated by summing the bits consumed by each picture, the number of bits of the sequence header of each picture, the number of bits of each Group of Pictures (GOP) header, and all stuff bits. In order to encode the video which is to be inserted in place of the removed video, a process is performed which prevents decoding artifacts from appearing. This is accomplished by determining the last P-picture before the edit point and using it as a reference frame for frames after the edit point. Additionally, a short period of the original video encoded using its original quantizer values is included at the end of the video to be substituted. Alternatively, the encoder may be run so that an earlier encoded reference picture is not used. However, this requires extra bits to maintain picture quality because initial bidirectional frames of the substitute video will use only one reference frame instead of two.

Method and system to replace sections of an encoded video bitstream

A table of a management region on the disc contains a disc identifier that represents the type of the data recording format of the disc, a number-of-disc-sides identifier that represents whether the disc is a single-sided disc or a double-sided disc, and a disc side identifier that represents whether the reproducing disc is side A or side B of a double-sided disc. A disc identifier 4 that represents the type of the data recording format of the file is recorded in a file (n) table including management information of the file. A reproducing apparatus reads the disc identifiers from the PVD table and the file (n) table and determines whether or not the disc and the file are reproducible. The video object unit includes a navigation pack which is placed at the head of the pack train. In a data cell, a plurality of video object units, each being reproduced within a predetermined period, are arranged and a cell playback information table describes a cell playback information which defines a playback order of the cells. The navigation pack has an area storing playback information for reproducing each video object unit and search information for indicating the relationship with other video object units. The data cells and the cell playback information table are stored in the optical disk.
