A phosphor element includes an incident face for an excitation light, an emitting face opposing the incident face and a side face, and the element converts at least a part of the incident excitation light incident onto the incident face to fluorescence and emits the fluorescence from the emitting face. The emitting face has an area larger than an area of the incident face. The phosphor element comprises an inclination region in which an inclination angle of the side face with respect to a vertical axis perpendicular to the emitting face is monotonously increased from the incident face toward the emitting face, viewed in a cross-section perpendicular to the emitting face and along the longest dividing line halving the emitting face.

Phosphor element, phosphor device, and illumination apparatus

A phosphor element includes an incident face for an excitation light, a reflecting face opposing the incident face and a side face, and the phosphor element converts at least a part of the excitation light incident onto the incident face into a fluorescence and emits the fluorescence from the incident face. The emission-side end surface has an area of from 0.3 mm-1.52 mm.

An optical scanning device includes a supporting body; an optical waveguide composed of a single crystal having electro-optic effect and integrated with the supporting body directly or through a clad layer; a plurality of periodic domain inversion parts formed in the optical waveguide, the periodic domain inversion parts having periods different from each other; and a plurality of electrodes capable of applying voltages on the periodic domain inversion parts, respectively, to generate diffraction gratings in the periodic domain inversion parts, respectively. The clad layer is composed of a material having a refractive index lower than a refractive index of the single crystal forming the optical waveguide. Each of the periodic domain inversion parts on which the voltage is applied is selected to generate the diffraction grating in the selected periodic domain inversion part so that a propagation light propagated in the optical waveguide is emitted to the outside of the optical scanning device as a diffracted light.

Phosphor element and illumination device

A grating element includes: a support substrate; an optical material layer; a ridge optical waveguide having an incidence surface on which a laser light is incident and an emission end from which an emission light with a desired wavelength is emitted; and a Bragg grating including concave and convex portions formed within the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes an incident portion between the incidence surface and the Bragg grating, and a tapered portion between the incident portion and the Bragg grating. In the Bragg grating, a propagation light propagates in single mode. The width Wof the optical waveguide in the incident portion is larger than the width Wof the optical waveguide in the Bragg grating. The width Wof the optical waveguide in the tapered portion is decreased from the incident portion toward the Bragg grating. The relationships represented by formulas (1) to (3) are satisfied.

Grating element and external resonator type light emitting device

An external resonator type light-emitting device includes a light source oscillating a semiconductor laser light and a grating element configuring an external resonator together with the light source. The light source includes an active layer oscillating the semiconductor laser light. The grating element includes an optical waveguide and a plurality of Bragg gratings formed in the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes an incident face on which the semiconductor laser light is incident and an emitting face from which an emitting light having a desired wavelength is emitted.

External-resonator-type light-emitting device

An external resonator type light-emitting device includes a light source oscillating a semiconductor laser light and a grating element configuring an external resonator together with the light source. The light source includes an active layer oscillating said semiconductor laser light. The grating element includes an optical waveguide and a plurality of Bragg gratings formed in the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes an incident face to which the semiconductor laser light is incident and an emitting face from which an emitting light having a desired wavelength is emitted. A half value reflectance Ris larger than a reflectance Rat an emitting end of the light source. A half value reflectance Ris 3% or larger. A combined reflectance is not less than the half value reflectance Rin a wavelength region &#x394;&#x3bb;. The wavelength region &#x394;&#x3bb;is continuous over 10 nm or more and 30 nm or less, provided that a half value reflectance is defined as 50 percent of a maximum value Rmax of the combined reflectance of the Bragg gratings.

A plurality of Bragg gratings are formed at predetermined locations of a laminate including a mounting substrate, a clad layer provided on the mounting substrate and an optical material layer provided on the clad layer. Optical waveguides are formed each including at least each of the Bragg gratings. Masks are formed each covering a region corresponding to each of the grating elements on the optical material layer. The optical material layer and clad layer are etched to shape an end face of each of the grating elements.

Grating element and external-resonator-type light emitting device

Provided a terahertz-wave detection element with high spatial resolution and suppressing a crack occurrence. A method of manufacturing the detection element capable of detecting a spatial intensity distribution of a terahertz wave includes: a step of forming an oxide layer on one main surface of a first substrate consisting of an electro-optic crystal; a step of joining the one main surface of the first substrate and a second substrate by an adhesive consisting; a step of thinning the first substrate of a joined body, to a thickness of 1-30 &#x3bc;m by polishing the first substrate; and a step of obtaining a large number of terahertz-wave detection elements by cutting the joined body. The oxide layer is formed such that the first substrate becomes convex to a side of the one main surface by causing a tensile stress to act on it.

A connecting structure includes an optical waveguide part, a holding part of holding an optical input member, and an adhering part adhering the optical waveguide part and holding part. The optical waveguide part includes an optical waveguide substrate including an optical waveguide. At least one of the holding part and optical waveguide part includes a recess and an adhesive face adjacent to the recess. The adhering part is provided on the adhesive face and in a single region distant from the optical waveguide substrate in a direction of thickness of the optical waveguide substrate.
