A display unit which the view angle is limited and the front luminance is improved is provided. The display unit includes a display device, and a light guiding part which is provided to face the display device, has an incident face on the side opposing to the display device, an emitting face on the opposite side of the display device, and a reflective face on the side face, and has a cross section expanding from the incident face to the emitting face.

Display unit

A display apparatus includes a first substrate, a second substrate separated from the first substrate by a predetermined gap, an electro-optical layer located within the gap, a diffusing reflection layer having a plurality of adjacent polygonal columns, and electrodes formed on at least one of the first substrate and second substrate for application of voltage to the electro-optical layer. The polygonal columns comprise upper end sloping surfaces having a maximum inclination angle of less than 12&#xb0;.

Diffusing reflector and manufacture of the same and reflection type display apparatus

There is provided a method of manufacturing a diffusing reflector which assures high diffusion efficiency and excellent reflection characteristic for the lighting. First, a resin film having photosensitivity is formed on a substrate. Next, gathering of pillar-shaped bodies isolated each other by the patterning of resin film with the photolithography is provided. Subsequently, the uneven surface layer having the maximum inclination angle under 12&#xb0; is formed by gently deforming individual pillar-shaped bodies with the heat treatment. Moreover, the gently deformed uneven surface layer is coated with the resin and the flat openings between pillar-shaped bodies arranged discretely are buried to ease the inclination angle. Finally, a metal filmformed on the gently deformed uneven surface layer.

Diffusion reflector and manufacture of the same

The invention provides a display unit which can improve emission efficiency of lights for image display, and assure luminance of display images. The display unit comprises micro prisms which are arranged in the positions corresponding to organic EL devices, and which have a high refraction index to refract a light, and auxiliary prisms with a low refraction index which are embedded in voids between each micro prism. A light volume of the light viewed as an image in the direction facing an organic EL display (facing direction) is a total of a light volume of a light essentially emitted from the organic EL device in the facing direction, and lights which are directed in the facing direction by utilizing refraction phenomenon based on differences of refraction index between the micro prism and the auxiliary prism. Compared to the case wherein the micro prisms and the auxiliary prisms are not provided, an emission volume of the light in the facing direction is increased by the light volumes of the lights.

Display unit and its manufacturing method

The invention provides a display of a type of getting light out of a second electrode side, capable of increasing contrast by suppressing external light reflection, simplifying a manufacturing process, and reducing cost, and a method of manufacturing the same. A substrate for driving is provided with organic electroluminescence (EL) devices for getting light out of a cathode side. A red filter, a green filter, and a blue filter are formed on a substrate for sealing by printing so as to face the organic EL devices. By overlapping at least two filters out of the red, green, and blue filters by printing, a black matrix is formed so as to face the boundary region of the organic EL devices, so that external light reflection by a wiring electrode between the devices is suppressed.

Display and method of manufacturing the same

A display apparatus includes a substrate, a plurality of pixels formed on the substrate, and a barrier plate for separating adjoining pixels from each other. Each pixel includes a lower layer portion having wiring formed on the substrate, an upper layer portion having an organic electro-luminescent element, and a middle layer portion for insulating the lower layer portion and the upper layer portion from each other electrically. The organic electro-luminescent element is connected with the windings through a contact hole formed in the middle layer portion. The barrier plate is disposed in the upper layer portion so as to overlap with a region including a contact hole not suitable for forming the organic electro-luminescent element.

Display apparatus using organic electroluminescent element and manufacturing method thereof

A display apparatus includes a substrate, a plurality of pixels formed on the substrate, and a barrier plate for separating adjoining pixels from each other. Each pixel includes a lower layer portion having wiring formed on the substrate, an upper layer portion having an organic electro-luminescent element, and a middle layer portion for insulating the lower layer portion and the upper layer portion from each other electrically. The organic electro-luminescent element is connected with the wiring through a contact hole formed in the middle layer portion. The barrier plate is disposed in the upper layer portion so as to overlap with a region including a contact hole not suitable for forming the organic electro-luminescent element.

A reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display device includes a first substrate for receiving incident light, on the inner surface of which transparent electrodes are formed; a second substrate which has a reflective film formed thereon and which is spaced to face the first substrate with a predetermined spacing; an electro-optical element held between the first and second substrates, which electro-optical element has a lamination structure including a guest-host liquid-crystal layer which contains a dichroic dye and which is uniformly oriented with respect to the transparent electrode, and an optical thin-film layer which has a predetermined optical anisotropic axis and which is formed at least on the reflective film, the optical thin-film layer being formed from a polymer liquid crystal having liquid crystal molecules which are uniaxially oriented along the optical anisotropic axis; and a passivation layer which is interposed between the optical thin-film layer and the liquid crystal layer.

Reflective guest-host liquid-crystal display device

A diffusing reflector provides high diffusion efficiency and superior reflection characteristics. The diffusing reflector includes a substrate, a resin film on the substrate, and a metal film formed on the resin film. The resin film indudes multiple adjacent polygonal columns that have upper end sloping surfaces with a maximum inclination angle of 12 degrees or less.

A hybrid type display apparatus capable of maintaining color purity in a case of transmission mode display, and improving lightness of color in a case of reflection mode display is provided. This hybrid type display apparatus is comprised of: a pair of substrates comprising a first substrate on a front side and a second substrate on a rear side, disposed in opposite directions spaced apart from each other; a first electrode provided on an internal surface of the first substrate; a second electrode provided on an internal surface of the second substrate; a color filter provided on the first substrate, aligned with a pixel in a portion between the first electrode and the second electrode spaced apart in the opposite directions from each other; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first and the second substrates; and a reflection layer provided on the second substrate. The reflection layer has a hole provided for each pixel, which divides a plane of each pixel into a transmission portion within the hole and a reflection portion outside the hole. The color filter comprises a lamination of a colored layer and a transparent layer. The colored layer is formed thinner in the reflection portion than in the transmission layer, and the transparent layer is formed to cover a difference in level between the transmission portion and the reflection portion.

Display apparatus, a method of manufacturing the same and a color filter

First, a photosensitive resin film is formed on a substrate. Then, the resin film is patterned by photolithography into a collection of quadrilateral prisms that are arranged discretely. Then, the individual quadrilateral prisms are deformed so as to be undulated gently by performing a heat treatment. Thereafter, a resin film is applied to the collection of deformed quadrilateral prisms, whereby flat gap portions between the discrete quadrilateral prisms are filled in and curved surfaces are formed there. Finally, a metal film is formed on the collection of gently undulated quadrilateral prisms.

Diffuse reflection plate, manufacturing method thereof, and reflection-type display device

A reflective display device includes a panel, a light guide plate and a light source. The panel is provided with a transparent first substrate lying on the side of the external incident light, a second substrate joined to the first substrate with a predetermined gap therebetween and lying on the reflection side, a guest-host liquid crystal layer held in the gap between the substrates, and electrodes provided on each substrate for applying a voltage to the guest-host liquid crystal layer. The light guide plate is composed of a transparent material and is arranged on the outside of the first substrate. The light source is arranged on the end of the light guide plate and generates illumination light as required. The light guide plate normally transmits external light onto the first substrate and emits the external light reflected from the second substrate, and also, as required, guides illumination light onto the first substrate and emits the illumination light reflected from the second substrate.

A reflection type display device includes a panel, a light guide plate placed external to the panel, and a light source placed at the end of the light guide plate for generating illumination light as required. The light guide plate normally transmits external light onto a first substrate of the panel and emits the external light reflected from a second substrate of the panel, while, as required, guides illumination light onto the first substrate and emits the illumination light reflected from the second substrate. The light guide plate includes a planar section divided into bands and an inclined section lying between each planar section. The light guide plate reflects the illumination light guided from the light source at each inclined section so as to lead it onto the first substrate and emits the illumination light reflected from the second substrate through each planar section and inclined section. The width of the planar section is set to 15 or more times, or preferably 20 or more times, the width of the inclined section.
