When new music content is generated on the basis of replication of original music content, additional information including information indicating that the generated new music content is based on replication and replication source information identifying a replicated-from source of the replicated content is generated and added to the new music content based on the replication. When the new (i.e., replicated) music content is to be used, a search is made for original music content on the basis of information identifying a replicated-from source and use of the new (replicated) music content is permitted only when the c original music content has been successfully found. Such arrangements reliably allow the replicated content to be used by a given person only when the person possesses the original music content.

An automatic performance apparatus which can make it difficult to discriminate between music contents which require copyright protection and music contents which do not require copyright protection. An encrypted content file distributed by a contents distributing site via a network is received, and copyright protection information indicative of whether or not the received encrypted content file requires copyright protection is acquired. The received encrypted content file is decoded to generate a decoded content file. On the other hand, when the acquired copyright protection information indicates that copyright protection is not required, the storage medium stores the decoded content file.

In an electronic musical apparatus, a media ID (MD, MD, MD, MD, MD) is associated with each recording media of a memory card, hard disk device, flash memory ROM, CD-ROMand internet. Each media ID is encrypted to be recorded on a different position in a ROM. Upon reading a music content, the media ID of the corresponding recording media is decoded to decode the music content based upon the media ID and the secret key, and then, the resultant is temporarily stored in a RAM. Upon writing a music content, it is encrypted based upon the media ID corresponding to a recording media and the secret key, and the content in the RAMis deleted. This makes cryptanalysis hard to thereby enhance a protection level of a music content in an electronic musical apparatus.

An electronic music apparatus has a sound generator for generating a music sound signal according to music data. A storage medium stores music data files, each written with music data for generating the sound signal. An information retention section retains file information for displaying a name or an icon of the respective music data. To a tone generation apparatus is removably attachable a plug-in board for generating a tone on the basis of performance information and extending the tone generating function of the tone generation apparatus. Tone color name information and tone color parameter name information of tone color data possessed by the attached plug-in board is stored in a nonvolatile memory. Thus, any tone color possessed by the plug-in board can be known with reference only to the nonvolatile memory and without a need to refer to the plug-in board. The nonvolatile memory can also store tone color data of a custom voice obtained by editing original tone color data of the plug-in board. With this arrangement, the plug-in board is allowed to obtain the tone color data of the custom voice from the nonvolatile memory, as necessary.

A musical tone controlling apparatus includes a tone generation instruction device, a detection device, tonal parameter generation device and a tone signal forming device. The tone generation instruction device outputs a tone generation start signal in accordance with a playing action of a performer. The detection device detects a movement or a state of the performer's body and generates a detection signal in accordance with the detected result. The tonal parameter generation device generates a first tonal parameter in accordance with the detection signal when the tone generation start signal is received and generates a second tonal parameter in accordance with the detection signal after the tone generation start signal has been received.
