The compound is represented by general formula (i). In the compound, in a group K, at least two secondary carbon atoms in an alkyl group (a linear alkyl, halogenated alkyl, or cyanogenated alkyl group having 3 to 40 carbon atoms) are replaced with &#x2014;C(&#x2550;X)&#x2014; and/or &#x2014;CH(&#x2014;CN)&#x2014;, where Xis an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, NH, or NR; in addition, a group A, a group A, or the group Kincludes, as a substituent, at least one P-Sp- group, where Pis a polymerizable group, and SPis a spacer group or a single bond. The liquid crystal composition including the compound represented by general formula (i) can be adsorbed onto substrates between which a liquid crystal layer is held, and, consequently, without the use of an alignment film, liquid crystal molecules can be maintained in a state in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in a vertical direction.

Polymerizable compound, and liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display element in which the compound is used

The present invention provides a compound represented by formula (i), a liquid crystal composition using the compound, and a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition. The compound represented by formula (i) has a partial structure Krepresented by any of general formulas (K-1) to (K-17) and further has ring B having at least two P-Sp- groups. Therefore, when used for a liquid crystal composition, the compound adsorbs to substrates sandwiching the liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and allows liquid crystal molecules to be held such that they are aligned in a vertical direction without a PI layer, and improved alignment stability and low-temperature storage stability can be achieved.

Polymerizable compound, and liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

The spontaneous orientation aid for a liquid crystal composition provides storage stability and allows liquid crystal molecules to be vertically aligned without a PI layer when added to a liquid crystal composition. When used in a liquid crystal composition, the spontaneous orientation aid can adsorb to substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and keep the liquid crystal molecules aligned in a vertical direction. The spontaneous orientation aid makes it possible to align liquid crystal molecules without a PI layer (to induce vertical alignment of liquid crystal molecules under no applied voltage and to achieve horizontal alignment of the liquid crystal molecules under an applied voltage).

Spontaneous alignment assistant for liquid crystal compositions

The spontaneous orientation aid for a liquid crystal composition provides storage stability and allows liquid crystal molecules to be vertically aligned without a PI layer when added to a liquid crystal composition. The spontaneous orientation aid for a liquid crystal composition includes a compound having a partial structure represented by formula (i), particularly in which Kis represented by one of formula (K-1) to formula (K-11). When used in a liquid crystal composition, the spontaneous orientation aid can adsorb to substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal composition (liquid crystal layer) and keep the liquid crystal molecules aligned in a vertical direction. The present invention provides a polymerizable compound that reduces, for example, the likelihood of crystals precipitating in a polymerizable composition including the polymerizable compound and enables the polymerizable composition to have high preservation stability and a polymerizable composition including the polymerizable compound which reduces the likelihood of inconsistencies being formed in a film-like polymer produced by polymerizing the polymerizable composition. Also provided are a polymer produced by polymerizing the polymerizable composition and an optically anisotropic body including the polymer. The present invention provides the compound represented by General Formula (I), a composition including the compound, a polymer produced by polymerizing the composition, and an optically anisotropic body including the polymer.

Polymerizable compound and optically anisotropic body

A liquid crystal composition that has a positive dielectric anisotropy and a sufficiently low viscosity and that causes no display defects when used in liquid crystal display devices is provided without decreasing or increasing the refractive index anisotropy or nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature. This liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0) and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by general formulas (LC1) to (LC5). This liquid crystal composition can be used to provide a reliable liquid crystal display device capable of maintaining a high voltage-holding ratio at high temperatures. This liquid crystal display device is highly practical as a liquid crystal display and is effective in achieving quick response without significantly decreasing the cell gap.

An object of the invention is to provide a polymerizable compound having small refractive index anisotropy and having high storage stability and high alignment properties when constituting a polymerizable liquid crystal composition, and provide a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound. Further, the object is to provide a polymer produced by polymerizing the polymerizable liquid crystal composition and an optically anisotropic body including the polymer. The present invention provides a compound represented by general formula (1) and also provides a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition. A liquid crystal composition exhibiting low viscosity and a liquid crystal phase within a wide temperature range can be produced by using the compound represented by the general formula (1) as a component of the liquid crystal composition. Thus, the compound is very useful as a constituent component of a liquid crystal composition for a liquid crystal display device required to have, fast response.

The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition useful as an electro-optic liquid crystal display material and having a positive dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;). The present invention, the present invention relates to an organic semiconductor material having a benzothienobenzothiophene skeleton, an organic semiconductor ink containing the organic semiconductor material, and an organic transistor using the organic semiconductor material. An object of the present invention is to provide an organic semiconductor material that easily provides a film having a high carrier mobility without the need for a complicated process. It was found that a BTBT derivative having a particular arylene acetylene structure is crystallized by way of a high-order liquid crystal phase having a highly ordered molecular arrangement, and thus the BTBT derivative easily forms a film having a high mobility without requiring complicated heat treatment even when the film is formed by printing. This finding led to the achievement of the object.

Benzothienobenzothiophene derivative, organic semiconductor material, and organic transistor

Provided is a liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal composition containing two or more compounds selected from compounds represented by general formula (LC0-1) to general formula (LC0-3), and one or more compounds selected from groups of compounds represented by general formula (LC1) to general formula (LC5). The liquid crystal composition has features of a large &#x394;&#x2208; and a low viscosity, and provides a practical, highly reliable liquid crystal display element that can realize low-voltage driving and high-speed response. The liquid crystal composition is useful for an active matrix driving liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal composition can be applied to a liquid crystal display element of an IPS mode or the like.

There is provided a liquid crystal composition containing the compound represented by the general formula (1) and a liquid crystal display device that uses the liquid crystal composition. The compound represented by the general formula (1) has high &#x394;&#x2208;, high T, and good miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds. Therefore, a liquid crystal composition that has high &#x394;&#x2208; and exhibits a liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range can be obtained by using the compound represented by the general formula (1) as a component of the liquid crystal composition. Thus, the compound is very useful as a constituent component of the liquid crystal composition for liquid crystal display devices.
