In order to provide an AC type plasma display panel having improved luminous efficiency, small power consumption and high luminance, sustaining electrodes ( ) of the AC type plasma display panel take in the form of mesh electrodes each having a plurality of openings ( ). A surface discharge alternating current plasma display panel has a pair of transparent electrodes supplied with current from metal bus electrodes through connecting portions spaced from each other by slits, a dielectric layer covering the pair of transparent electrodes and the metal bus electrodes and a porous insulating layer covering a part of the dielectric layer over the metal bus electrodes; when surface discharge occurs between the transparent electrodes of the pair, the surface discharge is spread toward the bus electrodes; however, the surface discharge can not exceed the slits; for this reason, the surface discharge is concentrated over the transparent electrodes.

In an AC type plasma display panel in which a discharge electrode and an dielectric material layer are formed on its substrate on the display surface, it has a structure in which a thin color filter layer containing fine inorganic pigment particles as its main component is formed in contact with or within the dielectric material layer. The color filter layer containing the fine pigment particles as its main component can have good performance by arranging that the color filter layer has a thickness of 0.5 through 5 microns, and the fine pigment particles have average particle size of 0.01-0.15 microns.
