An improvement in the process for continuously manufacturing a methyl methacrylate polymer plate by polymerizing the monomer in a casting space defined by the confronting surfaces of two endless belts running in face-to-face relationship with each other is provided. The improvement is characterized in that the belts are first passed through a first polymerization zone wherein the belts are contacted by hot water, the belts leaving this zone are freed from water clinging to their surfaces, and the belts are then passed through a second polymerizing zone having a temperature above 100.degree. C and forming the polymer plate which is then cooled at a controlled rate prior to withdrawal from the belts. The plate product has an improved heat distortion temperature.

Process for continuous manufacture of methyl methacrylate polymer plate

A continuous mixing method and system for preparation of syrup employed as a starting material for continuously manufacturing plate products therefrom are disclosed. The syrup is prepared by a method in which at least one additive is incorporated into at least one master batch of methyl methacrylate or a monomer mixture of methyl methacrylate and a copolymerizable unsaturated compound or a syrup of a monomer-polymer mixture thereof and the flow of the resulting liquid mixture is continuously combined with the flow from another batch of a syrup of the monomer-polymer mixture in a proportion such that the master batch is less in amount than said other batch, and the combined flows are continuously blended with each other. In the mixing system, the fluctuation in the flow from the master batch is detected by a detecting means which is operable for actuating the closure of the valve means provided for the storage vessel for the master batch, upon detection of the fluctuation in the flow rate from the master batch. Also, metering pumps are provided in the system, each being associated with each of the vessels for the master batch and the other batch for discharging the liquid content of each vessel at each fixed displacement ratio. The metering pumps are driven by a common motor via respective gear engagements having respective gear ratios for determining the fixed displacement ratios of the pumps. A mixer is also provided in the system for continuously blending the respective liquid contents to continuously obtain the starting material.

Apparatus for continuously preparing a syrup of a monomer-polymer mixture

Continuously cast plastic strip has interspaced marks or defects with lengths of unmarked usable strip therebetween. To obtain a maximum possible yield of sheets from such strip, the lengths of the portions between the marks or defects are measured and cut into sheets of two or more different lengths, the cutting being such as to produce the maximum yield of sheets of either or all lengths, singly or in combination, which can be obtained from the length cut. This procedure reduces the loss or waste due to the marks or defects, to a minimum. A special system is provided for this practice and for cutting out the marks or defects between the unmarked strip portions free from defects, with a minimum of loss or waste. Other features are involved.

System for cutting pieces from a traveling strip of sheet material

A process for continuously casting a sheet and the like, comprising, running two feed belts positioned in face-to-face relationship to each other, opposed belt surfaces of said belts being in the same direction without relatively displacement; running at least two gaskets together with the two belt surfaces at the both edges thereof; maintaining the opposed surfaces in any position rigid in the direction perpendicular to the running one and flexible in the running direction; supplying material between the belts from one side thereof; supporting the opposed belt surfaces by pressure of the material and retaining a gap in desired thicknesses between the belt surfaces in desired positions thereof; treating continuously the material between the belt surfaces and delivering treated sheet from the other side of the belts.
