In an ignition system including an ignition distributor integrated with an ignition coil, an electrical conductor linking leakage magnetic flux of the ignition coil is arranged on the outer periphery of the coil of an electromagnetic pickup to have a current conducting path around the axis of the coil. An eddy current is induced in the conductor by the leakage magnetic flux to generate magnetic flux in the direction opposite to the leakage magnetic flux of the ignition coil by the eddy current, thereby reducing a noise voltage generated in the electromagnetic pickup.

In response to a predetermined engine crankshaft position a reference pulse is generated having a leading edge advanced with respect to that predetermined position as a function of the rotational speed of the crankshaft. At low engine speeds the reference pulse is directly used as the ignition current. A start-of-dwell-time data word is derived in response to the trailing edge of the reference pulse and an end-of-dwell-time data word is derived in response to the leading edge of a subsequent reference pulse. These data words are used for engine operations at constant high speeds to advance the beginning and end of the dwell time of ignition current by an amount commensurate with an increase in engine speed. When the engine is rapidly accelerated the dwell time is started in response to the leading edge of the reference pulse and terminated when the end-of-dwell-time data word is decremented to zero.

The knocking detecting apparatus comprises a circuit for clamping the output of the knocking discrimination level generator circuit such that the knocking discrimination level does not exceed a predetermined voltage.

The operational amplifier receives at its inverting terminal a filtered knock signal and produces a half-wave signal through a diode. An ignition timing control apparatus for an internal combustion engine detects the rotational angle and intake vacuum of the engine to control the ignition timing of the engine in accordance with the computation of computing means on the detected signals, and on the other hand the vibration of the engine is detected to detect the occurrence of knock and thereby to correct the ignition timing in response to the detection of knock. The control apparatus includes a vibration detector for detecting the vibration of the engine, and a knock control circuit for detecting the occurrence of knock when the ratio between the average value of the outputs of the vibration detector during a predetermined angle or a predetermined time interval before the maximum engine cylinder pressure value and that of the vibration detector during a predetermined angle or a predetermined time interval after the maximum engine cylinder pressure value, and the ignition timing of the engine is retarded in response to the occurrence of knock.
