A diseased site where an anterior segment tissue is partly or entirely damaged or deficient can be treated using a corneal epithelium forming cell sheet that will adhere well to the anterior segment tissue. To attain this objective, a corneal epithelium forming cell sheet is produced by a process comprising the steps of cultivating under specified conditions corneal epithelium forming cells on a cell culture support comprising a substrate having its surface covered with a temperature responsive polymer of which the hydrating force varies in a temperature range of 0&#xb0; C.-80&#xb0; C., optionally stratifying the layer of cultured cells, and thereafter, (1) adjusting the temperature of the culture solution to either above an upper critical dissolution temperature or below a lower critical dissolution temperature, (2) bringing the cultured corneal epithelium forming cells into close contact with a carrier, and (3) detaching the sheet together with the carrier under specified conditions.

A therapeutic-substance carrying/administering appliance includes a cylindrical outer sheath; a slide member installed in the cylindrical outer sheath to be slidable therein; and a sheet supporting member, connected to a distal end of the slide member and made of a resilient material, for supporting a sheet-shaped therapeutic substance. The sheet supporting member is held in a flat unrolled shape in a free state in which the sheet supporting member projects outwardly from a distal end of the cylindrical outer sheath. When the sheet supporting member is in the free state, sliding the slide member in a retracting direction causes the sheet supporting member to contact the distal end of the cylindrical outer sheath, and subsequently further moving the slide member in the retracting direction causes the sheet supporting member to be retracted into the cylindrical outer sheath while being deformed into a tubular shape.

This invention is a water-soluble high molecular polymerized drug comprising a water-soluble clock copolymer having a hydrophilic segment and a hydrophobic pharmacological-functioning segment to side chain of which a drug is bonded. The hydrophilic first segments of the present invention include polyethylene glycol, polysaccharides, polyacrylamide, and so on. The hydrophobic segments being attached to a drug include polyaspartic acid, polyglutamic acid, polylysine, or derivatives thereof. Drugs to be attached to the hydrophobic segment include anti-cancer drugs, drugs for central nerve, drugs for circulatory organs, and so on.

Water soluble high molecular weight polymerized drug preparation

A system for transdermally delivering a hydrophobic alkanol soluble active agent to the skin at a constant rate utilizing a lower alkanol penetration enhancer. The system comprises an overlying solvent reservoir containing a lower alkanol solvent and a drug compartment containing an active agent in aqueous alkanol. A one-way membrane is sandwiched between and divides the solvent reservoir from the drum compartment. The one-way membrane is permeable to the alkanol solvent and substantially impermeable to back flux of drug and water into the reservoir. An outer membrane permeable to the alkanol solvent and drug is attached to the outer surface of the drug compartment. Adhesive means is contained on the outer surface of this membrane for attaching the delivery system to the skin of a wearer. Alkanol from the reservoir permeates into the drug compartment and drug and alkanol pass through the outer membrane to the skin of the wearer for transdermal absorption. The rate of alkanol permeation from the reservoir to the drug compartment and from the drug compartment to the skin is substantially constant. The membrane is made up of an epoxidized silicone rubber to which is preferably laminated a layer of a dense hydrophobic copolymer of vinyl-terminated polydimethyl siloxane with methylhydro-dimethyl siloxane. If desired, to prevent any back flux of hydrophobic drugs, and additional layer of cellulose acetate may be sandwiched between the epoxidized silicone rubber and dense hydrophobic membrane.

Transdermal delivery system utilizing one way membranes

An antithrombogenic synthetic polymer has repeat structural units represented by the following structural formula consisting of portions I and II: ##STR1## a microdomain structure composed of crystalline phases and amorphous phases, each phase having an average size of 5 to 10 nm, and a molecular weight in the range of about 10,000 to about 300,000. The polymer exhibits little adhesion of blood platelets thereto, an excellent antithrombogenic property and a sufficient mechanical strength.

Antithrombogenic synthetic elastomer having repeat units comprising portion I which is a soft segment unit containing a polyether and portion II which is a hard segment unit: ##STR1## R is a straight-chain or branched-chain alkylene group containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R' is amide a urethane, an urea, n ranges up to 180, m is an integer of 1 to 20, l is an integer of 1 to 10, said polymer having a microdomain structure composed of soft and hard segments, the domains of which have an average size of 10 to 20 nm, and a molecular weight of about 80,000 to about 500,000. The polymer shows little adhesion of blood platelets thereto, little deformation of adhering blood platelets and an excellent antithrombogenic property. This polymer has excellent mechanical properties as an elastomer. This polymer is useful for artificial organs such as blood vessels, kidneys, hearts, and for functional biomaterials and devices such as absorbents for biological components, carriers for sustained release preparations, adhesive materials for living tissue, injectors, blood bags and catheters.
