The present invention provides a piston ring structural body composed of an outer ring continuously formed of a resinous material, an inner ring continuously formed of a resinous material and a ring tensile force applying member for pressing the outer ring radially outwards via the inner ring. The piston ring structural body has a construction wherein the outer ring continuously formed of polyimide is pressed outwards in the radial direction of the piston by a coil expander via the inner ring continuously formed of PTFE. A sliding face of the outer ring, which slides on a cylinder wall, is divided into upper and lower sliding faces, whose respective upper edge portions are provided with chamfers. A contact portion of the inner ring that contacts the coil expander is provided with an upper inclined face extending inwards and upwards and a lower inclined face extending inwards and downwards. The angles of inclination of the upper and lower inclined faces range from 30&deg; to 60&deg;.

The present invention provides a sealing structure employing a piston ring structural body of a type wherein an outer ring continuously formed of a resinous material is pressed radially outwards by a metal coil expander via a metal inner ring provided with an abutment. The present invention aims at reducing the amount of oil consumption in a piston using a piston ring continuously formed of resin without being provided with an abutment. A stepped portion is formed on a third land, which is located below a second ring having a construction wherein an outer ring continuously formed of polyimide without being provided with an abutment is pressed against a cylinder wall by a coil expander via an inner ring continuously formed of PTFE without being provided with an abutment. Oil spill ports are provided so as to allow communication between the stepped portion and an inner wall of the piston.

A turbocharged internal combustion engine for a spark ignition internal combustion engine using gasoline as the fuel is disclosed. An intake system is constructed for the generation of a homogeneous flow of the intake air. The turbocharger is constructed to obtain a ratio of a pressure at the output to the pressure at the input higher than at least 1.5. A lean combustible mixture is obtained at a high engine load or engine speed area whereat the turbocharger can obtain a full supercharging ability. A relationship between the degree of supercharging is such that the larger that value of the air-fuel ratio, the higher the intake pressure. A high fuel consumption efficiency is obtained while preventing an excessive increase of the exhaust gas temperature.

In a sequential turbocharger system having a first stage large volume turbo-charger and a second stage small volume turbocharger, a diaphragm actuator is provided for an exhaust bypass valve bypassing a turbine of the small volume turbocharger. Disclosed is an internal combustion engine with an exhaust gas recirculation system. The engine is provided with an exhaust gas recirculation control valve device, a modulator valve device and a vacuum control valve device. The exhaust gas recirculation control valve device communicates an exhaust passage of the engine with an intake passage of the engine and is provided with a diaphragm chamber, partitioned by a diaphragm and communicating with a first port of a carburetor and a constant pressure chamber, partitioned by a valve body which is actuated by the diaphragm. The modulator valve device is provided with an upper diaphragm chamber, which is communicated with a second port disposed at a position nearer to a venturi portion of the carburetor than the first port and communicated with the vacuum control valve device. An orifice is disposed between a first communicating pipe, which communicates the first port with the diaphragm chamber of the exhaust gas recirculation control valve device, and another communicating pipe, which is communicated with a port disposed upstream of the first port.

A manifold type thermal reactor, for use in an internal combustion engine mounted on cars or other vehicles to collect exhaust gas from a plurality of engine cylinders into a reaction chamber is described. The chamber includes an external shell and an internal shell. The thermal reactor includes an external tubular pipe connecting at least one of the cylinders with the reactor and an inlet pipe connecting the tubular pipe with one of the openings formed in the internal shell. The angle between the axis of the inlet pipe and the axis of the internal shell is more than 0.degree. and less than 90.degree.. A gas-tight clearance is provided to allow sliding of the inlet pipe relative to a circular opening in the internal shell in the direction of the axis of the inlet pipe. A crescent-shaped clearance is formed between the external shell, having a cylindrical surface around a center line which is parallel with and apart a certain distance from the center line of the inlet pipe, and the external peripheral surface of the inlet pipe, and the external peripheral surface of the inlet pipe. The gas-tight clearance along with the crescent-shaped clearance will smoothly absorb the difference of the thermal expansion between the external shell and the internal shell by displacement of relative shell and the internal shell by displacement of relative position between the inlet pipe and the internal shell and by that between the inlet pipe and the external shell.
