A cell sorting apparatus includes an extracorporeal circulation systemfor sampling blood from a subject and circulating the blood outside a body; a cell measuring sectionfor supplying measurement light to cells contained in the blood to optically measure cell information on the physical quantity relating to the volume of the cell itself or a nucleus of the cell; and a cell separating sectionfor separating cells with reference to the cell information measured. The cell separating sectionseparates cells, based on the cell information measured by the cell measuring sectionand a sorting condition set for sorting a specific type of cell such as a cancer cell, the cells satisfying the sorting condition, and returns the other cells into the body via the extracorporeal circulation system. Thus, a cell sorting apparatus can be realized which is capable of suitably sorting a target cell from the cells in blood.

This invention relates to a laser beam machining apparatus equipped with a spatial light modulator. The laser beam machining apparatus according to this invention comprises a reflection-type spatial light modulator, hologram pattern writing means for writing onto said reflection-type spatial light modulator a hologram pattern corresponding to the desired optical image intended to be irradiated onto a target, laser beam irradiating means for irradiating readout light onto said reflection-type spatial light modulator at an incidence angle &thgr;, and a Fourier lens for performing a Fourier transform of said readout light, phase modulated by said reflection-type spatial light modulator. Through use of this laser beam machining apparatus, improvement in utilization efficiency of the readout light and improvement in the level of freedom in machining patterns can be expected.

An E-O probe for a two-dimentional voltage detecting apparatus using a fiber optic plate is provided. The fiber optic plate has a bottom face facing a measured object and a bundle of a plurality of cores separated from one another by cladding electro-optic material is attached to an end of each core at said bottom face side. A reflecting surface is provided on the bottom face side of the fiber optic plate for reflecting light back toward the side of the fiber optic plate opposite said bottom face. The refractive index of said electro-optic material varies in response to the intensity of an electric field applied to the electro-optic material. A two-dimentional voltage detecting apparatus using the E-O probe is further provided which has a high spatial resolution.

An optical converter is so arranged that light to be measured and probe light are made to interact with each other on a nonlinear element and that mixed light produced by the interaction is detected, which is characterized in that an energy amount of interacting signal light is kept as high as possible without spatial expansion of signal light, which could lower the SN ratio. For this, the time-space conversion function is achieved by a method for producing the probe light. Namely, the optical converter comprises (a) a nonlinear element for making two types of light interact with each other to cause the nonlinear optical effect, (b) a device for guiding light to be measured to the nonlinear element, and (c) a device for producing probe light crossing the light to be measured on the nonlinear element and changing a traveling direction of probe light with change of crossing time. A light waveform measuring apparatus or an optical serial-parallel converter may be attained by adding to the optical converter (d) a device for detecting mixed light produced by the interaction between the signal light and the probe light on the nonlinear element.

A radiation imaging apparatus comprising scintillators for converting radiation from a sample into scintillation light, image intensifiers for amplifying the scintillation light and forming an amplified image of the radiation, the image guides for directing the scintillation light to the respective image intensifiers. The observing field of a sample is conceptually partitioned into plural sections with each section corresponding to a respective one of the image intensifiers. One end of each image guide faces a respective section of the sample and the other end of each image guide is connected to a respective image intensifier.

New types of devices for measuring two-dimensional photon-caused or corpuscular-ray-caused image signals by means of a special television imaging technology suitable for an extremely low level of incident visible light, infra-red, ultra-violet, X-rays, .gamma.-rays, protons or neutrons are disclosed. These image signals are sensed by an electron emitting layer, i.e., a photoelectric emitter or a secondary electron emitter, which can respond to photons or corpuscular rays, and then amplified by a micro-channel-plate which can multiply the emitted electrons to a finite number with their positional relationships remaining in the two-dimensional area. The amplified signals are digitally processed to be displayed on a television picture monitor. The image signals on the television picture monitor can be printed out or saved in magnetic media.

Cancer diagnosis device contains an endoscope comprising a light pipe used to transmit light beams from respective light sources and an image guide used to observe the flesh of the organism during both diagnosis and treatment. The tip of the endoscope faces toward the focuses where a photosensitive material having an affinity to the focuses of cancer has been absorbed so that a treatment for cancer can be performed by exposing the organism affected by cancer to the laser beam. The attainable the laser beam within a focus is thus increased by the use of the laser beam pulse from a first laser beam pulse source. In addition to the above, the cancer diagnosis device contains a second laser beam pulse source used to transmit a light beam to the focuses through the light pipe for making a diagnosis, a selector used to selectively pick up the light beam from the first laser beam pulse source or the second laser beam pulse source, a spectroscope used to obtain the spectral response from emission of light led through the image guide used for observation from the flesh of the organism where fluorescence occurs, an imaging device used to pick up the spectral response, a graphic display used to graphically display the processed spectra picked up by the imaging device, and a controller used to control emission of light from the second laser beam pulse source and also to make the operation of the imaging device synchronize with the second laser beam pulse source.
