A multifocal lens array and a three-dimensional stereoscopic image display apparatus, which has a low cost, simple structure. A two-dimensional image is displayed on a display apparatus and is incident on a multifocal lens array. The array includes a plurality of lenses arranged on a planar surface, respective focal distances of the lenses being selected so that a focal point-containing surface is formed at a surface inclined relative to the planar surface. A stereoscopic diffusing panel including six transparent panels is disposed at the focal point-containing surface, and is moved periodically in a depth direction, so that sectional images of a three-dimensional stereoscopic image are rendered on the stereoscopic diffusing panel through image light from the apparatus, and hence a person viewing light reflected from the stereoscopic diffusing panel can see the three-dimensional stereoscopic image due to an after-image effect.

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium has a nonmagnetic substrate having concave portions and a soft magnetic layer on the nonmagnetic substrate. The depth of the concave portion and the thickness of the soft magnetic layer are larger than at least the length and the width of the concave portion such that the easy axis of magnetization in the regions of the soft magnetic layer in the concave portions is oriented perpendicular to the soft magnetic layer due to shape magnetic anisotropy. The easy axis of magnetization oriented perpendicular to the soft magnetic layer facilitates signal generation. The recording medium does not use the magnetization of the magnetic recording layer for such signal generation, which can be head positioning signals or other signals, such as copyright data. Instead, it uses the magnetization in the concave regions of the soft magnetic layer for such signal generation.

For protecting a copyright, stored digital information on a recording medium is attenuated in a certain period of time. For this purpose, the thickness of a magnetic layer and the diameter of magnetic crystal grain are changed to control the effect of the thermal oscillation on magnetization of a crystalline region to thereby provide the recording medium with digital information retained for a certain period of time, and attenuated along with time.

A magnetic recording medium having a carbon protective layer for protecting a magnetic layer formed on a non-magnetic base includes a liquid lubrication layer formed by coating on the carbon protective layer.
