The present invention provides a process for producing a compound represented by formula (I), comprising the steps of (a) reacting a compound represented by formula (II) with dimethyl sulfate in the presence of an alkali carbonate in a aqueous ketone solvent to obtain the compound represented by formula (I) as a crystalline material, and (b) washing the crystalline material with heated water at 30 to 100&#xb0; C. and then further washing with an organic solvent at 30 to 80&#xb0; C.

A process for producing 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1, 4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, comprising heating 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenedicarboxamide together with sulfuric acid exhibiting an acidity function (&mdash;Ho) of 10.27 to 14.44 in the presence of water contained in an amount smaller than a stoichiometric value of hydrolysis at 110 to 190&deg; C. This process efficiently produces 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid which is a precursor of dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate useful as a herbicide.

The compound of formula (I) has broad insecticidal activity against notixious insects, particularly Diptera and Lepidoptera.
