A leuco dye pastel marking device for use with a substrate treated with an activator of the leuco dye, such that drawing upon the substrate will reveal a color, but drawing on a normal surface will have no visible effect. A solvent such as dimethyl adipate is used to store the leuco dye in a longer-lived, more stable, solid form, and varying hardnesses and consistencies may be achieved by the addition of 12 hydroxystearic acid and ethyl cellulose. The substrate may be treated selectively with the activator such that a texture, image, or hidden message is revealed by the application of the leuco dye pastel to the substrate. One or more substrates and one or more leuco dye pastel marking devices may be presented to a child as a coloring book with pastels that only visibly mark the coloring book and no other surface.

A light source is configured to emit a narrow peak at a discrete spectral band, especially at a primary color wavelength. The light source can have a plurality of narrow peaks to simulate the effect of a broadband light source. A subject is provided with a pigment, such as certain rare earth lanthanides, with a strong absorption peak at a corresponding narrow spectral band. The pigment has a nominal color when illuminated by a true broadband light (e.g., sunlight) that does not have a narrow peak at the discrete spectral band, and has a different color when illuminated by the light source that has a narrow peak. This color shift can be used for security authentication, information and decorative applications.

A color-changing marking system, including a color-changing marking medium and a substrate. The color-changing marking medium has a nominal color and includes a color developer activator and/or color former leuco dye. The substrate includes a treated portion on which a color former leuco dye and/or color developer activator has been applied. Application of the color-changing marking medium to an untreated portion of the substrate causes the color-changing marking medium to create marks of the nominal color. Application of the color-changing marking medium to the treated portion of the substrate causes the color-changing marking medium to create marks of a changed color in response to a chemical or mechanical reaction between the leuco dye and the activator. The marking medium may a crayon, colored pencil, marker ink or paint.

Color-changing marking implement and substrate

A light source is configured to emit narrow peaks at discrete spectral bands, especially primary color wavelengths, added to simulate the effect of a broadband light source. A subject is provided with a pigment, examples being certain rare earth lanthanides, with a strong absorption peak at a corresponding narrow spectral band. The pigment has a nominal hue under true broadband light. When illuminated by the narrow band source, the absorption peak eliminates the contribution of one of the primary colors, producing a distinct shift in hue of the pigmented subject. The change in hue cannot be anticipated from the appearance of illuminated subjects that lack the pigment, which remain normal. The narrow absorption peak is not noticeable under unmatched light sources or true broadband light sources, e.g., sunlight. The hue shift effect is useful for security authentication, informational and decorative applications.

An invisible ink, a method for preparing an invisible ink, and an invisible ink product are disclosed herein. An invisible ink comprising a first ink combined with a second ink is applied to a print medium. The first ink comprises a color developer activator without a color former leuco dye and the second ink comprises a color former leuco dye without a color developer activator. The first ink is prepared with a polyvinyl alcohol binder, dispersant/surfactant, and a wetting agent. The second ink is prepared with a polyvinyl alcohol binder, grind aid, dispersant/surfactant and defoamer. Heat generated by rubbing and/or scratching the invisible ink on the print medium activates the color former leuco dye and activator to change the color on the printing medium.

A latent or 'invisible ink' security marking formulation is provided using a phosphor with distinct emissions characteristics including visible emission due to excitation at a particular invisible wavelength. An insoluble inorganic phosphor with this or a similarly distinct emission characteristic is milled to a small particle size, preferably less than one micron particle diameter, and is combined with a carrier at very low pigment concentration, for example one percent by weight of the ink formulation. Preferably the pigment is cropped to resin particles in a binder. This ink formulation is diluted by a volatile solvent and applied using a conventional inkjet printer of the type used to mark codes on packages and labels. To test for security purposes the printing is irradiated and a response according to the predetermined characteristic is noted (or not noted) to detect security information. The marking is not immediately apparent and without knowledge of the specific phosphor used is difficult for a counterfeiter to reproduce.

Latent inkjet formulation and method

In the method for associating source information with a substrate, which includes providing at least one latent marking agent that emits a signal at an emission wavelength in response to being irradiated with infrared radiation at an excitation wavelength, wherein the signal is at least a portion of the source information; and affixing the at least one latent marking agent to the substrate, a process for providing an ink with a viscosity for effective printing of the source information on the substrate. The at least one latent marking agent includes an inorganic pigment. In some embodiments of the method, the latent marking agent must be exposed to ultraviolet radiation before it can emit a signal in response to infrared irradiation.

The present invention relates to an aqueous latent image printing method which includes applying to a substrate, such as paper, a latent image ink composition, via an ink jet printer. The latent image is then activated to render it visible, by application of an activator.

A method and compositions for authenticating a document or article comprises applying a mixture of a carrier, a leuco dye and an activator to a surface of a document or article, wherein the leuco dye and activator react in response to a rubbing force applied to the surface to change color and wherein the activator is at least one selected from the group consisting of amidophenol, anilides with hydroxyl groups and benzoamides with hydroxyl groups and authenticating the document or article by applying a rubbing force to the surface to effect a color change.
