Overrunning coupling and control assembly, coupling assembly and locking member having at least one side surface with a draft to improve locking member dynamics are provided. Locking member dynamics is improved with regards to locking member laydown speed. Laydown speed variation cause by a variable frictional coefficient between a pocket surface of a pocket in which the locking member is received and nominally retained and the at least one side surface of the locking member is minimized as well.

Overrunning coupling and control assembly, coupling assembly and locking member for use therein having improved dynamics with regards to locking member laydown speed

A coupling assembly having an overrun mode and a locking member for use therein are provided. The locking member includes a first member-engaging nose, a second member-engaging tail diametrically opposite the nose and a main body between the nose and the tail. A control element-engaging appendage extends downwardly from a lower face of the main body. A pair of oppositely projecting pivots extend laterally from the tail for enabling pivotal motion of the locking member about a pivot axis which intersects the pivots. A control element engages the appendage to create a moment of the locking member about the pivot axis to urge the locking member from a coupling position towards an uncoupling position. The moment decreases the amount of force needed by the control element to move the locking member out of the coupling position.

Coupling assembly having an overrun mode and appendaged locking member for use therein

An electronic vehicular transmission, a controllable coupling assembly and a coupling member for use in the assembly are provided. The member is configured for rotation about a rotational axis and includes a first coupling face oriented to face axially along the axis and has a set of pockets angularly-spaced about the axis. Each of the pockets receives a first locking element and defines a first load-bearing surface adapted for abutting engagement with a load-bearing surface of its respective first locking element. A second coupling face is oriented to face radially with respect to the axis and has a set of locking formations. Each of the set of locking formations defines a second load-bearing surface adapted for abutting engagement with a load-bearing surface of a second locking element.

Electronic vehicular transmission, controllable coupling assembly and coupling member for use in the assembly

Device and apparatus for controlling the operating mode of a coupling assembly, coupling and control assembly and electric motor disconnect and pass through assemblies are provided. The device is a switchable linear actuator device to control the operating mode of a coupling assembly. A plurality of magnetic sources produce corresponding magnetic fields to create a net translational force. A stator structure includes at least one electromagnetic source and a translator structure includes a permanent magnet source magnetically coupled to the stator structure across a radial air gap. The translator structure is supported for translational movement relative to the stator structure along an axis between first and second stable axial end positions which correspond to first and second operating modes of the coupling assembly and an unstable axial equilibrium position between the end positions. The translator structure translates along the axis between the different positions upon experiencing the net translational force.

Device and apparatus for controlling the operating mode of a coupling assembly, coupling and control assembly and electric motor disconnect and pass through assemblies

A coupling member subassembly for use in a controllable coupling assembly and an electromechanical apparatus having a pair of simultaneously actuated elements for use in such a subassembly are provided. The apparatus includes a housing, an electromagnetic source having at least one excitation coil surrounded by the housing and a pair of spaced first and second elements. A reciprocating armature is arranged concentrically relative to the at least one excitation coil and is axially movable when the at least one excitation coil is supplied with current. An actuator bridge is mounted for axial reciprocating movement with the armature and is connected to the elements at opposite ends of the bridge to move the elements in unison between first and second positions during axial movement of the armature to control the operating mode of the assembly.

Coupling member subassembly for use in controllable coupling assembly and electromechanical apparatus having a pair of simultaneously actuated elements for use in the subassembly

An electromechanical assembly to control the operating mode of a coupling apparatus is provided. The assembly includes a first subassembly including a stator having at least one electromagnetically inductive coil to create a magnetic flux when the at least one coil is energized. At least one bi-directionally movable rod has a free end adapted for connection to a strut of the coupling apparatus for selective, small displacement strut movement. An actuator is operatively connected to the at least one rod for selective bi-directional shifting movement along a rotational axis between a first position of the actuator which corresponds to a first mode of the coupling apparatus and a second position of the actuator which corresponds to a second mode of the coupling apparatus. A magnetic control force is applied to the actuator when the at least one coil is energized to cause the actuator to move between positions.

Electromechanical assembly to control the operating mode of a coupling apparatus

A coupling and control assembly includes a coupling subassembly and a control subassembly integrated with the coupling subassembly. The control subassembly has a reciprocating member and actuators operatively connected to the reciprocating movement for controlled reciprocating movement therewith to move or pivot respective struts received within pockets of a coupling member of the coupling subassembly. The reciprocating member converts a pressure of a working fluid at its working face to move linearly together with the actuators from its first position which corresponds to a first operating mode of the coupling subassembly to its second position which corresponds to a second operating mode of the coupling subassembly.

Coupling and control assembly

Electromechanical apparatus for use with a coupling assembly and controllable coupling assembly including such apparatus are provided. The apparatus includes a housing part including an end wall having an outer coupling face with a single pocket defining a load-bearing shoulder in communication with an inner face of the end wall. An electromagnetic source includes at least one excitation coil which is at least partially surrounded by the housing part. An element is received within the pocket in an uncoupling position and is movable outwardly from the pocket to a coupling position characterized by abutting engagement of the element with the load-bearing shoulder. A reciprocating armature is arranged concentrically relative to the at least one excitation coil and is axially movable when the at least one excitation coil is supplied with current. The armature is connected to the element to move the element between the coupling and uncoupling positions.

Electromechanical apparatus for use with a coupling assembly and controllable coupling assembly including such apparatus

An electromechanically actuated coupling and control assembly is provided. In one embodiment, an overrunning clutch and control assembly having first and second operating modes is provided. The clutch and control assembly includes first and second clutch members supported for rotation relative to one another about a common rotational axis. The first and second clutch members have respective coupling faces that oppose each other. The coupling face of one of the clutch members has a pocket. The coupling face of the other clutch member has a locking formation. The assembly further includes a strut received within the pocket in the coupling face of the one clutch member and has an end that is pivotally movable outwardly of the pocket. The assembly still further includes a biasing spring. The assembly further includes an electromechanical apparatus including an actuator mounted for controlled linear reciprocating motion and in communication with the pocket. The assembly still further includes communication apparatus for wirelessly communicating electrical power from a source of electrical power to the electromechanical apparatus to cause the actuator to linearly move and pivot the strut end against the bias of the spring from a first position which corresponds to the first operating mode to a second position which corresponds to the second operating mode.

Electromechanically actuated coupling and control assembly

Overrunning coupling and control assemblies, each of which includes control apparatus having a latching mechanism are provided. Each latching mechanism prevents an actuator arm of an overrunning coupling assembly from moving in a first direction substantially parallel to a shift direction of a control plate of the coupling assembly within a housing slot in a locked condition of the mechanism in a first position of the control plate. A control pressure signal within a bore of the housing changes the condition of the latching mechanism from locked to unlocked to unlock the actuator arm and causes the unlocked actuator arm to move along the first direction within the slot and the control element to move along the shift direction to a second position. The control pressure signal also causes a piston which has a groove formed in its outer surface to receive and retain a free end portion of the actuator arm to slide within the bore in the housing against the biasing force of the at least one biasing member. In the absence of a control pressure signal, the at least one biasing member moves the piston and thereby the unlocked actuator arm in a second direction opposite the first direction within the slot and the control element along the shift direction from the second position back to the first position and changes the condition of the latching mechanism from unlocked to locked to lock the actuator arm.

Overrunning coupling and control assembly including apparatus having a latching mechanism

A fuel shut-off system for a carburetor substantially reduces or prevents the delivery of fuel to an engine when the engine is turned off and as it coasts to a stop. The fuel shut-off system preferably reduces or eliminates the pressure differential across a nozzle through which fuel is delivered from a fuel chamber through a fuel-and-air mixing passage of the carburetor and into the engine. In this manner, the flow of fuel through the nozzle is reduced and preferably eliminated immediately upon engine turn-off to prevent the after-fire and associated problems within a residually hot exhaust system. The system incorporates an actuator, preferably a solenoid valve, having a first position which obstructs a vacuum bypass passage communicating between the fuel chamber and the fuel-and-air mixing passage, and a second position which enables communication between the vacuum bypass passage and a fuel chamber passage which otherwise communicates with a near atmospheric pressure source.

Carburetor fuel shut-off system

A carburetor has an upper body and a lower separate nozzle post member that extends into the fuel chamber of a lower fuel bowl. The nozzle post member has a main nozzle mixing passage leading from a main fuel jet inlet to a nozzle. An annular air passage and an annular idle fuel passage surround the mixing passage. The nozzle post member also has integrally formed brackets to pivotally mount the fuel float.
