Conversion of waste and other organic feedstock into sustainable energy, feed, fertilizer, and other useful products of reliable purities is accomplished using water, heat, and pressure. More specifically, the invention provides methods and apparatus that handle mixed streams of various feedstocks, e.g. agricultural waste, biological waste, municipal solid waste, municipal sewage sludge, and shredder residue, to yield gas, oil, specialty chemicals, and carbon solids that can be used as is or are further processed. Useful products can be diverted at various points of the process or internalized to enhance the efficiency of the system.

Methods and apparatus for converting waste materials into fuels and other useful products

Methods and apparatus for processing of waste and low-value products to produce useful materials in reliable purities and compositions, at acceptable cost, without producing malodorous emissions, and with high energy efficiency are disclosed. In particular, multi-stage processes are disclosed to convert various feedstocks such as offal, animal manures, municipal sewage sludge, tires, and plastics, that otherwise have little commercial value, to useful materials including gas, oil, specialty chemicals, and carbon solids. Disclosed processes subject the feedstock to heat and pressure, separates out various components, then further applies heat and pressure to one or more of those components. Various materials produced at different points in the process may be recycled and used to play other roles within the process. Also disclosed are apparatus for performing multi-stage processes of converting waste products into useful materials, and at least one oil product that arises from the process.

Process for conversion of organic, waste, or low-value materials into useful products

The present invention addresses the processing of waste and low-value products to produce useful materials in reliable purities and compositions, at acceptable cost, without producing malodorous emissions, and with high energy efficiency. In particular, the invention comprises a process that converts various feedstocks such as offal, animal manures, and municipal sewage sludge, to useful materials including gas, oil, specialty chemicals, and carbon solids. The process heats the feedstock in order to breakdown proteins and separate organic material from bone material, applies further heat and pressure to the resulting liquid mixture, separates out various components, then further applies heat and pressure to one or more of those components. The invention further comprises an apparatus for performing a process of converting waste products into useful materials, and an oil product that arises from the process.

Apparatus and process for separation of organic materials from attached insoluble solids, and conversion into useful products

A suspension of bacterial cellulose having a reticulated structure has been conditioned to remain in suspension when the suspension is under shear so that it may be coated on a substrate. The suspension of bacterial cellulose is homogenized and thereafter filtered to provide a bacterial cellulose component having a size no greater than 125 microns. This allows a process for applying bacterial cellulose as a coating on a substrate on a substantially continuous basis, either by roll coating or spraying. It also provides a coated product in which the bacterial cellulose is substantially uniform, taking into account the normal discontinuities of roll coating and spray coating.

A drainage tester evaluates the reaction pattern of one or more reactions in a paper pulp furnish to predict behavior of the pulp on a paper line. The tester includes a mixing container in which an additive is mixed with the slurry under conditions that prolong the reactions in the container such that they take longer than the same reactions on a paper line. The mixer can also mimic the kinetic conditions (such as mixing by turbulence or passive diffusion) under which the additive is mixed with the furnish on the paper line. A test container has a screen bottom that separates furnish solid from slurry water by developing a pressure differential across the screen. An intermediate container is positioned between the mixing container and test container to provide a constant hydrostatic head on furnish transferred to the test container. A sensor above the screen in the test container monitors changes in the optical characteristics of a sheet formed on the screen to automatically determine the drainage time of the formed sheet. Sequential equal volume aliquots of furnish are withdrawn from the mixing container and sent to the test container at preselected time intervals after chemical additives are mixed with the furnish in the mixing container. Physical characteristics of the sheet, such as fines retention, drainage time and visual appearance, are recorded as a function of time from addition of additive to the mixing container. Behavior of the sheet on the paper line can be predicted in this manner to help an operator efficiently operate a paper machine system.

Evaluating furnish behavior

The present invention relates to the recovery of heat values from biomass materials such as wood waste or peat. Wood waste or 'hog fuel' from the forest industries is of particular interest. It has been discovered that this material can be burned with no fossil fuel support in an air suspension-type burner without the need to finely pulverize the full fuel stream. One portion of the biomass fuel stream is ground so that it is less than 100 .mu.m in diameter. This fine portion serves as an ignition component and should comprise about 20% of the total heating value of the fuel, using a conventional air suspension burner, or 10% of the total heating value using a staged burner, when the burners are operated at full load. The balance of the fuel can be of much larger particle size. This can be up to about 10 mm or even greater in maximum dimension if used with a grate equipped boiler. If the boiler lacks a grate, the principle fuel component should not exceed about 1 mm in thickness and 4 mm in any other dimension if carryover is to be avoided. A key aspect of the invention is the discovery that the total amount of ignition fuel component should be maintained constant regardless of burner load. The principal fuel component is modulated to accommodate load swings. Thus, at lower loads a higher percentage of the total heat energy is derived from the ignition fuel component.
