In order to improve the dispersion of nonionic surfactant into wash water from a granule in which the nonionic surfactant is carried on a water-insoluble granular material, the nonionic surfactant is intimately blended with a water-insoluble liquid. Preferred water-insoluble liquids include hydrocarbons, for example, paraffins.

A particulate free-flowing laundry detergent composition comprises at least two different granular components: a granular component containing anionic surfactant, and a granular nonionic surfactant component comprising from 20 to 30 wt % of nonionic surfactant on a non-spray-dried particulate carrier material comprising sodium sesquicarbonate. The nonionic surfactant component is preferably prepared by in-situ neutralisation of sodium carbonate with a water-soluble organic acid in the presence of the nonionic surfactant, in a high- or moderate-shear mixer.

A particulate detergent composition having a bulk density of 700 g/l or less and containing at least 10 wt % (preferably at least 15 wt %) of organic detergent surfactant comprises a base powder composed of at least two granular components. A transparent soap composition in bar form comprises with respect to the total composition 40 to 65 wt % of a soap mixture and 60 to 35 wt % of a solvent system. The solvent system includes with respect to the total composition 5 to 15 wt % short chain (C&lt;4) monohydric alcohol or a mixture of said monohydric alcohols, 5 to 20 wt % water and 15 to 40 wt % of a mixture of trialkanolamine and polyol or blend of polyols, the said mixture having a ratio in weight terms of trialkanolamine to polyol or polyols lying within the range 1:3 to 1:0.25, the total composition comprising not more than 20 wt % trialkanolamine. The resulting soap bar has good transparency in combination with user properties approaching those of an ordinary opaque soap bar. The present transparent soap bar can be made by forming an isotropic transparent melt of the composition, casting the melt into moulds and allowing the melt to set. Suitably the melt is retained in the moulds, which are preferably in the form of a pack comprising flexible film material, as an air-tight storage means.

A translucent detergent bar is provided containing with respect to the total weight of the bar 25 to 34 wt % soap, 5 to 15 wt % alcohol, 15 to 30 wt % sugar and/or cyclic polyol, and 15 to 30 wt % water, the soap comprising a soap mixture consisting of 18 to 26 wt % soluble soaps and 8 to 16 wt % insoluble soaps calculated with respect to the total weight of the bar. The bar has good user properties and yet can be a low cost bar due to its relatively low soap content.

Translucent detergent bar having a reduced soap content

Translucent detergent bar contains 30 to 45 wt % soap, 5 to 15 wt % monohydric alcohol and 5 to 15 wt % dihydric alcohol whose molecule contains at least one alkylene group with at least three carbon atoms and water. Optional ingredients include up to 10 wt % non-soap detergent and polyhydric alcohols, sugars and polyalkylene glycols. The combination of monohydric and dihydric alcohols promotes translucency while avoiding disadvantages observed with either of them alone. The bars can be made by forming a melt of the component ingredients, casting the melt into molds and allowing it to set.
