A method for preparing a polymer insulated cable including a semiconductive layer surrounding a polymeric insulation layer includes: cutting the semiconductive layer by grinding a circumferential dividing groove in the semiconductive layer using a rotating grinding surface, wherein the dividing groove defines first and second semiconductive sections of the semiconductive layer on opposed sides of the dividing groove; and thereafter removing the second semiconductive section from the polymeric insulation layer while retaining the first semiconductive section on the polymeric insulation layer.

Methods and apparatus for preparing power transmission cables

A wedge connector assembly for forming an electrical connection with first and second electrical conductors includes a coupling portion, first and second resilient spring sleeve portions located on the coupling portion, a first wedge member and a second wedge member. The first spring sleeve portion defines a first sleeve cavity tapering in a first direction away from the second spring sleeve portion and the second spring sleeve portion defines the second sleeve cavity tapering in a second direction away from the first spring sleeve portion. The first wedge member is configured to be forcibly driven into the first sleeve cavity in the first direction to capture the first conductor and the second wedge member is configured to be forcibly driven into the second sleeve cavity in the second direction to thereby capture the second conductor.

Wedge connector assemblies and methods for connecting electrical conductors using same

A power transmission line cover includes an elongate, flexible panel and first and second elongate, integral edge portions. The first edge portion includes an elongate first latch feature and the second edge portion includes an elongate second latch feature. The cover includes an elongate inner creepage extender wall forming a part of one of the first and second edge portions, and an elongate outer creepage extender wall forming a part of one of the first and second edge portions. The flexible panel is wrapped about a power line and the edge portions are joined together to form a longitudinally extending closure seam wherein the latch features are coupled and the edge portions form an electrical creepage path extending from the chamber to an exterior boundary of the cover along the inner creepage extender wall, between the first and second latch features, and along the outer creepage extender wall.

Power transmission line covers and methods and assemblies using same

A wildlife guard assembly for use with an electrical insulator body includes first and second guard members and an actuator member. The first and second guard members define a seat to receive the insulator body and are connected to one another to permit relative movement between an open position. The first and second guard members define a sideward opening to laterally receive the insulator body into the seat, and a closed position, wherein the first and second guard members at least partially encircle the insulator body to capture the insulator body in the seat. The actuator member is configured to be inserted between the first and second guard members in the open position and, when forcibly displaced radially to an installed position, to force the first and second guard members to move from the open position to the closed position.

Wildlife guard assemblies and methods for using the same

An electrical connector assembly includes a first conductive member and a second conductive member. The first conductive member includes a first channel portion extending from a first wedge portion, with the first channel portion configured to receive a first conductor therein. The first conductive member includes a jaw movably coupled to the first channel portion and being positioned between the first channel portion and the first wedge portion. The second conductive member includes a second channel portion extending from a second wedge portion where the second channel portion configured to receive a second conductor. The first wedge portion and the second wedge portion are assembled such that the second wedge portion engages the jaw and moves the jaw to the closed position. The jaw engages the first conductor in the closed position. Optionally, the first channel portion may have a contoured shape.

Hand-held devices that can be used to quickly install flashover protection covers around energized electrical conductors and equipment are provided. Each device includes a guide assembly that defines a pair of spaced-apart, converging passageways that are configured to slidably receive the elongated edge portions of a flexible panel therethrough. The converging passageways force together the opposite edge portions of a flexible panel being advanced through the guide assembly.

Hand-held apparatus for installing flashover protection covers on energized electrical conductors

Covers for distribution lines coupled to an insulator include a main body of a flexible polymer material. The main body is configured to be positioned adjacent the insulator and a line coupled to the insulator. At least one connector member is connected to the main body. The connector member is a rigid material configured to couple to either the insulator or the line to attach the cover.

Hand-held apparatus for installing flashover protection covers on energized electrical conductors and equipment

A cover installation apparatus installs continuous lengths of flashover protection covers around energized electrical power lines. The apparatus includes a cover assembly housing that takes a flat, extruded length of material and forms the material into a closed circular shape surrounding a power line. The cover assembly housing includes opposite first and second ends, with an inlet port in the first end and an outlet port in the second end. An interior passageway extends along a longitudinal direction from the inlet port to the outlet port and is configured to receive the power line therethrough. The interior passageway also provides a path for the flexible panel to follow from an uninstalled configuration to an installed configuration surrounding the power line.

An environmentally sealed splice closure (20) for buried telecommunications cables (32) and splices (33) includes a base (22a and b) having ports (31a and b) for receiving the telecommunications cables (32) therethrough. A cap (25) is received on the base (22) to form a cavity (50) within the splice closure (20). The cavity (50) is filled with a gel sealant (45 and 47). A dome (55) on the end of the cap (25) opposite the base (22) accommodates volumetric and pressure changes within the closure (20).

Splice closure for buried telecommunications cables

A rodent-proof aerial splice closure (20) includes a substantially hollow casing (30, 31) having substantial externally exposed plastic areas. The casing sections (30, 31) are moveable with respect to one another on a hinge (35) for accessing the interior of the casing. Clamps (50) provide for reversibly holding the casing sections (30, 31) closed. Cables can enter and exit the closure (20) through cable ports (45), which can be sealed by end-pieces (55). The exterior geometry of the closure (20) is such that substantially all exposed plastic surface regions which are accessible to rodent teeth are rounded with curvatures preferably greater than one inch radii, thus large enough to prevent rodent teeth from biting down thereon.
